What do these stats mean? - 3/22/2003 9:23:24
OK, so I' m not a website statistic checker. [:j] Most of my clients don' t have a need to know the number of hits and have never asked. But an outfronter recently inquired about the stats for one of my sites so now my curiosity is piqued. The admin control panel gives me LOTS of stats [:' (], Below are the ones from top-of-the-long-list. Can someone please help me understand what each means? Total Requests 218404 Total Page Requests 8365 Total Bytes Served 874121808 Failed Requests 2526 Distinct Hosts Served 1252 Distinct Files Served 1481 thanks, gail

Total Requests 218404: This is the number of requests for files within you web site. This includes all files including gifs, jpegs, htm, html and shtml files. Total Page Requests 8365 : This is the number of requests for web pages only (.html, .htm, .shtml) Total Bytes Served 874121808 : This is the amount of traffic that has been transferred from your site. This is shown in kilobytes or bytes (1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte) Failed Requests 2526: The total number of requests that failed. This could be for a variety of reasons. (incorrect URL, missing link/page etc.) Distinct Hosts Served 1252 : This is a count of each unique, individual computers (IP address) that reached your web pages. For example, if your home computer went to your page 4 times in a row and your office computer went to your page 2 times in a row then it will count as 2 distinct hosts. Distinct Files Served 1481: This refers to each unique file that has been requested by your visitors. For example, if you have 2 pages, one index.html and one sales.html and both were visited 10 times each, it would be counted as 2 unique files served. Essentially, after the first hit to a page is counted, any others additional hits to that page are ignored. No , I' m not that smart I got the definitions from here idirecthosting

quote:
Total Requests 218404 The number of requests for files received by the server. This will include requests for all sorts of files - images, css, pages, javascript files etc. Sometimes referred to as ' hits' quote:
Total Page Requests 8365 The number of requests for pages only, this is a more useful measure of requests than hits. quote:
Total Bytes Served 874121808 The total size of all the files served over the period in question. In this case that means about 830Megabytes or .8 of a Gigabyte quote:
Failed Requests 2526 Requests for files that did not suceed. May be for example if people enter the wrong url, or look for a file that moved or an image that did not exist. There will always be some of these, and at less than 1% of total requests, this would be pretty normal. quote:
Distinct Hosts Served 1252 The number of different IP addresses that users had. Not the same as the number of users, since many will have a different IP address each time they log on, but as near as you can get. quote:
Distinct Files Served 1481 The number of different files that were served. For example the likelihood is that 100' s of users looked for the index.html file, but it will only be counted once here. This usually more or less equates with the number of files in your web.

Thanks Gail for posting this question and to everyone that answered. I have another stat. What is unique visitors. Also, AWstats always show host unknown. IPs unresolved. Why is that?

Also keep in mind the stats for AOL visitors are pretty much useless - there could be 100+ visitors from one of AOL' s proxy servers that would all have the same IP...
