DIGITAL WATERMARKING II - 3/22/2003 11:56:46
I really screwed up my initial posting -- somebody feel free to delete it, eh? I would like to get a few opinions on digital watermarking from companies such as Digimarc. I don' t know if there are any others. The websites I currently work on have quite a few photos that should be accredited to their makers. Instead of a blurb on the page, it' s very nice and professional to embed that digital watermark. It DOES cost $100 - $150 a year per subscription and I wonder if it is worth the expense. Any users out there? How do you convince your clients that it' s worth it? Is there a better alternative? I like the idea of it myself and I think it will make less work for me in the long run. But I' m not really sure how well it will work and I know it won' t stop anyone from copying a photo. SPRING HAS SPRUNG IN THE WEST!! Thanks ~ Maura

Hi Maura, I got a trial from Digimarc with something--PSP or PI--not sure which. I used it for a few photos but the cost seemed too high to keep it. And I' m not real sure I ever really undestood the whole thing. I guess they work okay but if you want to go after someone for infringement it just seems like a lot of legwork involved and the burden of proof is too expensive. Maybe that' s why it really hasn' t caught on. Dave

It was most likely Paint Shop Pro - versions 6 and newer have Digimarc included under Image > Watermarking. You still need to register and pay the fees, but this gives a free trial period to test it out and makes it easy to use. I don' t think it' s a matter of this " not having caught on" , but more of what level of images and the cost involved in them that one is trying to protect. For the corporate marketplace and professional photographers, this is a viable service where the cost may not seem that high. For many others a viewable watermark is an easier solution ...and free. quote:

The digital watermark cannot be seen at all, so it is professional from the standpoint of not having any markings on the image. I think most wouldn' t have a problem with a visible watermark, though. digital watermark example > www.digimarc.com/watermarking/techOverview.asp prices > www.digimarc.com/register PSP visible watermark tutorial > www.grafx-design.com/24psp.html Linda
