I installed the beta version of FrontPage 2003 last Friday and have used it both at work and at home. Work is Windows2k with just over 256MB of memory and the system is not really stable (I' m going to XP as soon as the new memory comes in). Home is Windows XP with a Gig of memory.
Both environments installed easily and well and without reboot. Both come up quickly upon a double click on the FP icon.
The UI is different - nice, pretty, and welcoming. It looks familiar but with a nice new makeover. The first thing you notice when you open up a page, is that now you have lots more options down at the bottom. You have the regular, and the preview and the HTML, but now you have this very cool one calls SPLIT.
Split puts the HTML on the top of half of the screen and the WYSIWYG on the bottom and they ' sing' to each other. Click on the photo on the bottom and the top highlights the code that starts with img src.. And, vice versa... on the top screen, hightlight anything and the bottom screen jumps to it.
Plus the HTML is color coded! and the lines are numbered!
There are all kinds of cool image toys - built-in buttons and tabs.
I haven' t even found everything yet, but I love it.
On the downside, Publisher 2003 appears to suck.

There was no option for keeping any other versions which I was not too happy about initially. But, now, I got no reason to go back so I' m ok. It' s an upgrade only.

Ha! Thanks anyway. My gameplan was just to reinstall OfficeXP if there was a problem. After I saw your post, however, I checked the XP machine and it had made a restore point for me anyway! Wasn' t that the sweetest?? I must have set something somewhere that says ' save me automatically' .
I have since installed the rest of Office (Outlook sure is nice looking) and have so far had no problems with any of it.
I' m just loving this FrontPage. It' s just wonderful.

Yeah, im an idot and I realized that after I posted it, but thats ok I guess.
So does this mean that you will have this program forever, meaning it doesn' t expire or anything. I would really like to get FP 2003 when it actually comes out but i doubt i' ll be able to afford it. If I got the beta and was satisfied, could i keep it forever?

The Office beta does expire on Nov 30, 2003. Be careful if you install it on your primary machine and are not planning to purchase it when the final version is released.

I installed on WinXP (Home) with 256MB memory and a 1.5 GHz Celeron processor and haven' t had any problems so far. It did give me the option of keeping previous versions, which I did, and I' ve even run it at home on my laptop side-by-side with FP2002 without any problems.
I haven' t gotten through all of the features yet, either, but the new built-in Accessibility checker (under the tools menu) seems to be almost as good as Bobby/Watchfire (although I haven' t gone through it line by line and compared yet) and I' m already missing the split pane option when I use FP2002 at work.
Another thing that I like is that it seems like you can dispense with using external editors for certain file types (text files and I got a *.js file to open in FP2003, too).
It does say that the full-blown version is only good through November ?? of this year, but after that, it says that ' limited/reduced' functionality will still be available to the user.
I really think this is an improvement from 2002, which in itself was light-years better than 2000, so MS is definitely on the right track.

I had read that Office 2003 requires WindowsXP (I' ve also read that MS was discontinuing support of Win98 after this summer)...is that correct? That means I am out of the loop since my 3 year old box cannot be upgraded to XP - tried and failed. Not sure I can afford a new box. Might not have been a good marketing strategy for MS given the current economic situation. [:' (]

I' m not sure how this rumor got started but as you can see from my original entry, Office 2003 does NOT require Windows XP. I have it running quite nicely on my Windows 2000 machine.

I stand corrected! I now have learned that it requires 2000 SP3 or higher. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Although I could have sworn I read that it required XP only somewhere...........(I don' t know, maybe I am losing it)

I am waiting on delivery of the beta, but was wondering about one of the features I heard was included in the new version.
Right now I have a discussion board and classifieds board running on one of my sites, and everytime i publish changes, I really have to watch out I don' t overwrite the databases that have been filling up on the server(FP 02 sometimes will not publish all changes done on some pages, so every once in awhile i have to change settings to overwrite).
Will 03 detect the most recent file and sychronize the files from the server?

I upgraded to XP Home Edition. Was using 98SE before. No problems with the upgrade.
Just received my Beta 2 Kit 2003 and am ready to try the new features.

The publishing UI is greatly improved and - it seems to me - to offer more options.
It offers you:
local to remote
remote to local
synchronize
I have one website that I' ve been kind of sloppy with - sometimes making changes on the remote server and sometimes making changes on my local version and publishing a single page or two. Very sloppy, I know.
FP 2003 shows me what files on each side (remote and local) are listed as do not publish and which are in conflict and some other cool things. I' m not entirely sure all this is new (I know the UI is but I haven' t really explored publishing options of 2002 recently...), but it' s all very interesting.
So, while I' m clearly not answering your question perfectly, I do think you' ll find the publishing function a lot easier to control and manage and a lot less easy to overwrite with!

FP 2003 New features are directly related to what Dreamweaver is already offering in MX. Especially the publishing features and working with various file types. (don' t get me wrong here, I do some stuff in FP others in DW).
Reduced function after Nov might mean you can do everything except SAVE.

No problem at all. Been running Office 2003 beta since it came out as Office 11 beta 1 to the front line testers...it also works just fine on my old IBM ThinkPad PIII 300 with 296MB RAM and XP Pro.

I' ve got XP Pro running solid on my PII (not PIII) laptop, a Dell Inspiron 233Mhz, 256MB RAM. I didn' t mess with an upgrade, I blew away the old system (Win 98SE) and did a fresh install.
The OS has been the most stable on this machine, and I must add it made me convert my production system to XP. Put it this way, I have a tendancy to leave my machines running, and I' ve left the laptop go for over a month without rebooting, locking up, or any other nastiness. I dig that!

I haven' t tried PHP code specifically, but so far it' s handled any quirky thing I' ve thrown at it. I just paste in whatever I want and/or create whatever I want... ASP, VB, java script... No funky nothing.
And, there' s this option that may have been there before but I' ve never seen it called ' format HTML' . Hit that and all your lines and indents just snap into place. It' s a beautiful thing.
