XP IIS FP2000 migration - 3/25/2003 8:48:27
Hi,

I am migrating to XP and have installed IIS 5 and FP2000 - I used to have PWS and W98. (FP was unhappy that I am using FAT and not NFTS but I as sumed this was not a show stopper)

I cannot configure SMTP for email (in FP extensions) properly as my forms do not work on my local (i.e development before publishing) machine anymore. I need to know exactly what I should be specifying for the following :

1. Web Server Mail Address ( I used 127.0.0.1)
2. Contact Address ( I used my personal email address from my ISP)
3. SMTP Mail Server ????????????? I have no idea

I am getting the dreaded Save Results Component message.

Regards

Tony Randell

Did you use email in your previous configuration? If so the same SMTP server should be used, I suspect.

XP Pro does have a local SMTP server available. Configure it from the IIS MMC snapin (administrative tools - internet information services). I don' t use it myself but it' s supposed to be a pretty good SMTP server.

Hi,

Thanks - I was using PWS before and did not have any problems. Now I have to use IIS and I am not sure how to configure Extensions via MMC. I installed FP2000 and IIS with defaults, I just do not know what values I have to enter?

I have no error messages - just forms do not work via email?

SOLVED

Found article " How to Specify Mail Settings in the Microsoft Management Console " # 201526 in Microsoft .com.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q201526

It gives a clear explanation about this and I was up and running in minutes.

Can I resurrect this topic from the dead? I want to be able to test my pages on my XP Pro machine. I have installed IIS, but cannot seem to get the email part to work. The paragraph below is from the above-referenced MS article and it implies that the IP address of my web server and SMTP server can't be the same? Has anyone been able to successfully send mail through their XP box with IIS and SMTP installed?

SMTP Mail server: Type the SMTP server's Host name or IP address. Note: The fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or IP Address entered here must point to an existing Exchange server or SMTP server (NOT an IIS SMTP server) on your LAN or your ISP's "SMTP host," "SMTP relay host," or "SMTP smart host." The server extensions use the IIS SMTP service which CANNOT deliver mail directly to an end recipient. The only time the FQDN or IP Address will be the same as your IIS server is if Exchange is installed on the same machine as the Web Server (Not Recommended).

First Of All, make sure that your IP address on all the servers are Unassigned, that way there won't be a conflict.

What that error is saying to me is:

Set up another web server and installed a third party Email system (e.g. Argosoft *spelling????*), as the IIS will only act as a virtual, not surreal (as it were). But you could always install the Exchange server on the same machine, but that isn't safe, as there would be a conflict on software programs here and there

HTH
