Online version of print magazine - 3/26/2003 12:05:19
I am contemplating talking to a publisher of a free distribution, advertiser supported specialty magazine about creating, updating and hosting an online version of it. It has about 150-200 advertisers per issue (10 per year) and 60% of them advertise some sort of email or URL in their ads. The niche he publishes to is growing (it' s an outdoor recreation activity), has a widespread online presence via retailers, distributors, information sites both nationally and internationally. I want to present the idea as a win-win for me, him and his advertisers. My plan is to have his current sales channel sell the online version as a package with the print ad. The package would range from simple e-mail links in directory format, to a custom tile with hotlink on the editorial page featuring information on that advertiser' s region, as it is in the print directory. The issues I am thinking about: Do I charge for creation of the site, or be a profit partner on the e-ads sold? Do I charge a monthly update/ creation/ editing/ hosting fee or profit partner again? Do I charge a one time fee to advertisers for creating the tile? Is there any benefit to offering the " dead elephant" banner ad as an option? Do I offer the online version as a stand-alone advertising vehicle? Thanks for any insight, oh wise ones. Bigdoggy

Do I charge for creation of the site, or be a profit partner on the e-ads sold? you could do either. Obviously it will depend on: a) how much " free" work do you want to put in. Being a profit partner could been that you do lots of work for little $. At the same time, it could mean major $ if they get there marketing right. b) how much $ they have available for a project like this. If they' re running at a low $ turnover it may be their only option to use you as a profit partner until the site fee has been paid. Do I charge a monthly update/ creation/ editing/ hosting fee or profit partner again again, it could be either. If you' re creating the site and they are you client then charge a monthly update/ creation/ editing/ hosting fee. If you' re a profit partner then your time is already accounted for in the proftis from ads. quote:
Do I charge a one time fee to advertisers for creating the tile? not usually, This would be in the price of the ad. If its simply a matter of converting from print, the ad has already been done, you' ll just need to run it thru Image Ready to bring the mg down for web. quote:
Do I offer the online version as a stand-alone advertising vehicle? not to start with - it may become that once it catches on.
