Preventing linking of images - 3/31/2003 21:37:03

Thanks.

Easiest way to break the links:
in FP open the site and make a folder called images, then drag each image file into it. Now if you already have done that, or every so often after doing so, change the name of that folder to /image or /pics or /whatever.

When you do this within FP all your internal links will be automatically updated... and all the people linking to you will lose theirs. :):)

If you feel really nasty have them do advertising for you!

Where the original images where at make a copy there. Put a watermark on that copy advertising your URL. Even better just straight out replace with a GIF by the same name. Run promotional text and your URL.

I did this once. The worst offender that I tracked did not notice for over two weeks.

Yea,...I don' t think you can really prevent it, but you can make people think twice about continuing with it......

I have felt nasty about it before. And when I was in that mood, I would create just a really offensive and nasty image to replace the one that was being " tapped" .

I' m proud to say that I have shutdown several free sites with those nasty replacement images. Once the host gets a look at what their " subscribers" have showing on their sites - they just pull the plug. And that' s the end of your problem, too.

And Reflect' s right - most people won' t even notice that you' ve replaced the image with something else.

Hi,
I was having trouble with people linking directly to my sound files, but if your host supports .htaccess then there is a free online tool to stop people from linking to your images and other files, it can be found under the Freebie section of this site Hot Linking Script

How about just adding a no right click script.

Two reasons.

If someone has to go through the bother of breaking the script just to get at the picture they might not bother.

If they can' t they have to look at the source code, and go through the bother of finding the correct picture URL in the code.

If they still do that, why not change the picture to say something like stolen from.......then your URL. [:p] May be of help, don' t use an absolute URL for pictures, use a relative one to help confuse the issue.

What does the right button on the mouse have to do with viewing the source?

No need to " break" a script - some of us hardley ever use a mouse any way[:p]

Plus, a lot of people (who do use a mouse) use right click to " add to favorites" - so you keep them from adding your site?

Yes as JSettoes said you can do this 100% if you are on a UNIX server and can access your .htaccess folder or your host will add a quick folder for you.

Example.

http://www.talkfrontpage.com/tutorials/fppublishing.htm (Linked directly to the file) Bad bad bad.

http://www.talkfrontpage.com/showthread.php?s=345732a555330913b68456c6ba38f40c&threadid=1157 (linked from within the website) Good..

You can protect any type file in any folder.. You could protect your complete website.

This does not prevent people from right clicking and saving and since they does not work very well since all images are stored in your cache anyway.. There is an option to limit people doing that also.. There is a java script download program on that above site also that you can pulls in an image it will create a transparent gif over it, you name the transparent image something close to what the picture is and you name the real image 755F325ssa4.gif (or something wacky) and people that are going to steal from you will right click and they will save the transparent gif thinking that are getting the image since the name looks right.. oh sooo bad.. [:p]

Add those two features to your site and you will fool 90%+ of would be theives.

Enjoy...

:) Thanks for proving my point. Mike54, Funny that does not seem like a linked picture.

Tell me was it much easier to save the picture :) and then upload it rather than link it.

Oh by the way [:p] that image is copyrighted, it says so on my site. lol

Hi Gil,

also from NC I see, well from this Irish guy that just moved here last year may I point out that a lot of people that use IE use the right mouse button to click on a web page.

This brings up a menu [:j], one of the options on this menu is.......wait for it......
......
......
......view source.( Along with add to favourites :))

As was proved by mike54, there is more than one way to skin a cat. IE also comes with this handy button just above the address bar called .......
wait for it........
........
........
........
yes you got it....favourites.

Thinks, it might be worth while mentioning that I posted a work around for a certain right click script a few days ago.

Check the image properties again.:) For the record, the page the image is on doesn' t seem to contain the text " copyright" on it anywhere, unless of course a visitor happens to right click.:)[:p]:) Which of course I would never do.:)[:j]

Actually it was more work.[:p]:):)

Of course it helps if your creative about naming your folders. Using the default " www.mysites/images/" folder isn' t going to fool many people.:)

DaAngel,

I like your site but beware...the expertise on this board is awesome! The reality is that there is NO foolproof way to keep people from copying or linking to your pictures and trying to use any right click methods will send more people away then it does good.

Now I am worried :) the people on this board have expertise on copying and linking to pictures. What an ideal place for a web designer to be [:p].

I never said there was a foolproof way, but mention right click script to most designers and you can see 40% try to get past it for the shear fun and another 40% tut tut about it.

I would consider myself in the first 40%. As for experience, I found my internet legs in beseen chat. :). A harsh environment. I can more than hold my own despite the newbie tag attached to my name in this forum.

But hey, if you get frustrated with the right click, why not try the left click ....

lol,

:) I don' t use FrontPage. I just like this board.

I was using Go Live, but crafted that site by hard sweat and beady eyes.

By the way you got me, for the minute! and a minute only, my hosting company has been causing me heartache of late. Not only have their web stats been down for a few weeks, but they seem to have left my file setting on share. Plus their cgi is down...the list goes on.:)

It doesn' t refer to FP in any specific context so join in, relax and have a little fun. Help out where you can and become one.:):):)
