i don' t know if this sheds any light on your problem but I' ve noticed over the last few days that one of my Adwords campaigns has been " automatically" moved to a premium sponsorship position. Thats cool as long as I don' t get the bill!

What happened?????? Hi, First thing that comes to mind is a major link for you removed the link, got the Google update cycle and then Google adjusted your PR based on it. For the higher PR sites I actually would keep tabs once every two months. I would visit the site and make sure my link is still there. Make sure it is still on the same page. If not on the same page I would then search Google to see if the new page was in the index, if not I would submit it for them. Brian

Hi, Just had another thought. Had you changed anything on your site between cycles/updates? navigtation changes, content changes and page structure changes could also effect your PR. Brian

I' ve always understood Page Rank ( PR) to be a calculation of a web page based on it' s external and internal linking, and the on-page criteria of the web page being linked to as well as the web page being linked from. (optimum word here is linking) If the PR Google assigns to your page(s) drops it' s because the links pointing to your site have changed or stopped pointing at your webpage. I don' t believe changing the internal linking structure of your site would drop your score two points unless you made radical changes - like deleting them all. If my site dropped two points, I' d backlink and check out the sites linking to me. I' d check for spam and check their PR. Remember Google only reports sites with PR 4/10 or better. Then I' d go out and find some quality sites complementary to mine and ask for the link! Debra.

Well the first thing I did was check all of my incoming links . I can' t see any changes there. I haven' t made any significant changes to the site just the normal daily updates. I am double checking everything now. I remained in the top 4 search results after this months google dance for all of the search terms that anyone would use so that part is good.

How you structure your site will affect the flow downwards of page rank to your money pages. I did a search but it has been a while. I had posted a GIF, with permission, from Webmaster World as they owned the image, that actually showed the flow and the best structure for a site. I believe I still have it on my home PC. I can repost if you would find it interesting. Brian

Hi I' ve seen a number of sites lose a point or 2 of page rank but maintain or improve their listing. Personally I' d say it' s not something to worry about and maybe caused by the ever-changing method of calculations - and that page rank is pretty much irrelevant if the Google listing is still maintained. Cheers Andy

Hi Shirley, Per your request... http://www.searchengineworld.com/engine/theme_pyramids.htm I seemed to get good PR down to the product/item page. Most product pages on my last site ranked around 4 or 5 which made me pretty happy. Take care, Brian

One other important aspect with PageRank is rescaling of the database. When Google is constantly indexing hundreds of thousands, millions and even billions of pages, PageRank goes through a rescaling. I had a site sitting a PR8 for a month and then all of a sudden it dropped to PR6. There just happened to be a major Google index update that month and PageRank was rescaled across the entire index. Keep in mind that PageRank is not the only determining factor in being found in those coveted top positions. Google looks at over 100 different areas when determining the quality of a page. You can have a site with PR4 outperform a site with PR6 any day of the week. I do it all the time. Don' t get me wrong, it is nice to have the high PR and have the Google Freshbot latch on.

Hi It seems Google is in the midst of major changes and results / PR are fluctuating from hour to hour, I think it might be a while before things calm down as this seems to have been going on for at least a couple of weeks and shows no sign of abating. Cheers Andy

Based on my observations of Google updates over the past couple of years, I have a theory that Google is now going to perform Perpetual Updates. The monthly update as we' ve known in the past is probably extinct and we will see constant Freshness of the Google SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). P.S. Don' t be too concerned with your PageRank. The Google Toolbar is for public consumption only. There are other things going on behind the scenes that influence your ranking with Google. Ever since people started capitalizing on PageRank the system appears to be changing. Certain industries get what I refer to as a PR Cap. You may reach PR6 and never get above that because of PR Cap. I have many PR3/4 pages out there that outrank PR6/7 pages. PageRank is just one of the factors in determining the quality of a page. There are 99 others that Google claims to calculate into the overall quality of the page with PageRank being in the top ten.
