Oh Man, LookSmart' s lookin worse... - 4/18/2003 16:35:05
I was contemplating not too long ago to go ahead the $49/yr unguaranteed listing for LookSmart, but I thought, why, since I get what I want... and NOW... they are PAY PER CLICK ($0.15 MINIMUM!!!!). I am kicking myself and hoping it won' t last. I want to be in looksmart to get ahead a little, but sheesh, why pay $0.15 when I can pay $0.05 through overture??? Anyone have a scoop?

To be in the top 3 on OV costs me usually $1.80 to $2.50 per click. The LS $0.15 per click is the *max* you pay per click. It is the entrance fee - you can' t buy your way to the top - rather LS ranks their directory based upon SEO. Ecommerce is becoming a " pay to play" business for anyone who is not in the top 10 listings and even then paying for ads can have a great ROI. For example - In MSN I am #1 and #3 for a good keyword, *but* OV has the first 3 listings and then there are 6 listings from LS. That makes my #1 become #10 on the page! Now, in theory I should be able to pay the low $0.15 per click and be the the LS listings and since I beat my competition in SEO (for now) I will likely be #1 (or near the top) in the LS listings. Just my thoughts...

My CTR through overture is about 6% on average. I have tried google, but the conversion is really not impressive (for me). Thanks for your input. My particular interest was because I was selling items. For MSN, the manufacturer comes up as the first two, then a client, and then me. I am doing well without paying, so far.

I have had an account on overture / goto since 1999, so there are still some keys at 0.01 lol for me. Just kicking myself for not paying the inclusion fee before now (darn it). Wht happened to finding relevant sites based on relevant content. Man.

Ouch! You guys/gals are being somewhat harsh on LookSmart. ;) In this case, it is a matter of ROI (Return on Investment). MSN pulls results from LS. The way the program works is like this... 1. You determine which url you are going to submit, Usually your home page to begin with. The cost is $49.00 per url (one time fee) and a flat click charge of $.15 USD. 2. You select eight (08) keyword phrases that are relative to that page you are submitting. 3. You set your monthly budget. When you' ve clicked up your budget, your listing(s) go offline until the next billing cycle. It is a pretty simple program and one that can be rewarding if you know how to target the proper phrases. You also need to make sure that your page titles (title elements) and meta descriptions are written well. You' ve got one chance to get that searcher to click, make it your best! I recommend that you view your web statistics closely and look at your MSN traffic if you have any. Then take a look at your Google traffic and observe what terms are generating high volumes of traffic. Use those terms as your first targeted terms at LS. If they are doing well in Google, they will most likely do well in MSN via the LS feed. Keep in mind that the determining factor in ranking with MSN via LS are the keyword phrases that you entered during the submission process.
