Please critique site - 4/21/2003 15:41:12
Would appreciate feedback on this site, which is far from complete. I have a few NN 4.7 problems but I' ll come back another time for help if I can' t sort them out on my own. Right now I' d like feedback on the overall design and functionality.

This is a redesign of the client' s current website, which was developed by another company. I was provided with all the cusa header graphics and each is a different color for most of the headings.

The goal was to make the site become less blah than what the client thought it previously was. It is to be inspirational, uplifting and hopeful, even colorful. The client requested the green background color.

thanks in advance, gail

You made the Green work with the Autumnal images. Colours like green need to be dark without being muddy.
I love the tune, but are you going to enable it as background rather than watch the slider.

PS. Hopefully you can find time to view my site. (new post)

Not unless someone can tell me how to set it up without having the music stop when you go to another page; or starting all over again when you return to the same page. [:' (] The media player allows someone to listen while browsing other pages.

I appreciate your input. Will check out your site later this evening.

Hi _gail,

I like it but...
The color changes tend to make the pages " jump" as they' re navigated. I know they' re pretty much the same size but the shift in color exagerates it a little. (Small stuff I know:)) Actually there is just a tad of a " jump" between some pages regardless of the color, " home" to " inspiration, " who we are" to membership" and " membership" to " news and events" . Position the cursor on a menu item and click, if the cursor is not where it was I think of it as a " jump" (picky, picky, picky I know[:j]). The green isn' t really noticeable since the focus is on the " center" of the page. One thing I might do though is have the right side images all be the same height for consistancy (since the color is changing). Perhaps set up like the " inspire" page with a member quote underneath? (Just a thought).

I like it _gail, really, I just had to find something... :):)

Hi Gail,
Looked at your site with IE 6.02 and NN 7.02. Just used 800 X 600 resolution since Mike54 uses larger ones. Actual dial-up speed tonight is 26.0 kbps.

(1) Loved the loading times! :) With the exception of #2 below, nothing was over 17 seconds. That is really fast for me.

(2) http://www.cusan.org/galleryphotos/index.htm
Page took forty-five seconds to load. The right-hand frame started to load/refresh first and then the images in the left frame started to load. I looked at your images, most were 2,000 or 3,000 bytes. The largest ( http://www.cusan.org/galleryphotos/thumbnails/20cusaphoto.jpg ) was 5,218 bytes. I think is was the number of images and not the size which slowed the page. Also, I' m getting a three-quarter inch horizontal scroll bar on the page.

(3) I couldn' t listen to the audio - I finally got the dog meat settled for the night and the sound would start them off again. :)

Say hello to the folks in Bayonne, NJ, from The Better Half! That' s her hometown and her parents and siblings still live there.

Edit: Teaches me not to run spell check prior to posting. The Sisters of Charity and Jesuits would have been haunting me all night![:j]

Hi Gail,

I like the site, colors and the navigation is easy to follow.....the only suggestion that I have is on the gallery page; when I got there I could not find my way back to your other pages.. I am not sure is this is because you still working on the gallery and you will be adding navigation to it.

Other than that Great Job!!

Monica

Thanks a big bunch, all!:) Working on your suggestions and navigation.

Appreciate John' s speed check. I redid the photo file sizes and hope the slideshow loads more quickly. I rec' d VERY poor quality images but that' s all we have to work with.

Is the " jump" really that bad?! Sheesh, Mike, I' m glad you' re not my boss. [:p]

Then the new photo gallery link will probably drive you nuts ( oooh, goodie :):) ). I added a GUIDE page, which uses a different page layout. Maybe I' ll change down the road but not now.

Don' t have enough quotes.

Sorry, can' t help. I know little about audio.

Would welcome additional comments. thanks again,

gail

Hi Gail,
I checked http://www.cusan.org/photogallery/index.htm again tonight with both IE 6.02 and NN 7.02. Current dial-up connection speed, based on http://www.thebandwidthplace.com/ is 26.2 kbps.

Loading time was thirty-five seconds.

As previously mentioned, the right frame loaded first and started to refresh as the left frame loaded. I still have the horizontal scroll bar at 3/4 inch.

You mentioned poor quality as to the images. Looking at the sight with a resolution at 800 X 600 and color quantity of 32 bit, they looked fine to me.

A thirty-five second loading time, considering the graphics you have, is fast for me. What does your potential viewing audience have. I could be really slow.

Not any more.:)
The photo gallery loads immediately on a T1 and the images look fine to me. I do get a horizontal scroll bar in the right frame with a resolution setting 1024x768.
I think the site looks great _gail. :) :)
