I think this thread is probably better under the Review/Criticism section, but anyway---

A few quick notes about design:

  • Don' t center large blocks of text. If you want to center it on the screen you can put them in a single celled table that is centered. 95% width seems to look nice for me.
  • Cute animated .gifs are not professional. Cuteness and professionality are eternal enemies. Any sort of graphic should add to and amplify your main content, not draw attention away from it.
  • It is better to use a single background thoughout the site and give it a " unified" theme. If you have a good reason to change colors, try and have some sort of universal element that exists in all pages.
  • Avoid using all capital letters and underlining large portions of text. Use bold, alternate colors, and larger font sizes to draw attention to important things. All caps is perceived negatively and underlining is usually reserved for hyperlinks on the world wide web.
  • Avoid unnecessary banners. The guestbook banner is out of place in a professional site. That is more appropriate for a personal site.
  • You should use separte fields for all the information (name, phone, etc.).
  • While you claim the information will only be used for your own personal use, the form is not secure. You really should make a secure form. You should also create a privacy statement and some reason that they should give you this information. Also, you might want to wait until they want to participate before asking for this information.

There' s more, but I think this should be enough to think about for now. Good luck!

No problem. It' s a learning process. I suggest you look at the tutorial on Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) on this site. Click on the FAQs/Tutorials link on the top of the page. It' s simple and you' ll end up saving time by using it from the very beginning.

You' ll find many people with lots of great advice here. Just do one thing at a time and then come back and ask for suggestions every now and then.

One last suggestion-- you ask to gather information by asking for feedback on the site.

Hi Kristy,
Just for your future information. Above your avatar is an envelope icon which allows members to send you an e-mail message. For the protection of your privacy, remember that it is not necessary to list your e-mail address inside your post.

As to suggestions, puiwaihin' s were so far beyond what I could offer that I' m not going to make a fool of myself! :)

Kristy,

I edited your post, please forgive me.

I removed your e-mail address. Reason is I used to be " one of those people" who would use automated programs to " troll" groups and forums for e-mail addresses to " harvest" and sell.

I admit to this now as I am reformed (been years, forgive me for I sinned),.

My edit was in your best interest and I hope you do not take offense.

John is spot on using the PM system :).

Take care,

Brian

He was trying to keep you from becoming a victim of those that will gather and sell email addresses - he did not mean you were doing the gathering.

By the way, here' s a link to a series of articles, written by our own abbeyvet, on using CSS.

http://www.outfront.net/tutorials_02/adv_tech/css1.htm

Although it can be a very difficult subject to get a grasp on, she does an excellent job of explaining things.

Hi Kristy,

You are " able to do the same for you guys" . Keep in mind that I' m also learning from many of the questions you ask here. You' re helping to educate me through them and I thank-you for that.

Many of the posts here I initially don' t understand. (Some I never will![:p]) Over time, I' ve found that I can place many pieces together from numerous posts and the light finally goes on as to understanding something.

Without everyone' s input, that education doesn' t work.

No I did not mean you were. I mean that every day, every hour people do this. So just a friendly tip not to publish in a forum or news group your permanent e-mail address. When I do that use a Yahoo address or something.

Keeps the spam down :).

Take care,

Brian
