Hi Gail,
I used MAS-90 back in 1996-1998. Its a modular manufacturing software. If I remember correctly, it was a menu driven program (similar to the old time main frames) and was not window driven. We had to drill down through multiple menus and then had to exit-out back to the main one.

Inventory worked through an Inventory Master File (part number, description, unit of measure, etc.) Accounting cost, in our case Standard Cost, pulled from the General Ledger costing module. We could run costed Bills of Material, plus Engineering and Phantom ones.

The Purchasing module pulled from a vendor data base with an interface to current/standard cost from the General Ledger module.

The Sales module held basic address information, plus data as to prior sales.

What I do remember is that the modular Report Writer was extremely limited. We eventually used Microsoft Access to pull the information from the MAS-90 data base and and reformatted it into meaningful reports for us. Identifying data fields within MAS-90 was extremely difficult.

I eventually moved that company from Kentucky to Norcross, Georgia, in 1998. A good portion of my thirteen weeks spent in Georgia was converting MAS-90 to a new system.

With all that said, please don' t ask for help or assume I' m an expert. I' m gone through several Windows and mainframe systems since then. To be honest, until I sit at the keyboard and use a particular program again, they all seem to blend in. (Mom asked for a letter this weekend which is on my old 386. I fired up the old computer upstairs and it literally took me hours to remember how to navigate the old DOS Shell from 1991![:p])

John

MAS-90 was (or I guess is) a moderately popular accounting package for mid-size businesses. I have done computer work for my CPA since the early 80' s and helped him support a few clients on MAS-90 back on Novell 2.x networks.

The product was sold, last I heard until this post it was owned by Sage.

Once it was set up MAS 90 seemed to do the job pretty well for the customers I worked with.

As with any accounting software, if you' re not familiar with the client' s business and accounting practices, and if they are a company of any size, I recommend a consultant familiar with both the accounting software and the client business do the set up their system. The technical aspects aren' t difficult, but there are pretty complex financial settings necessary to properly configure a business accounting system.

Some of my CPA' s clients had consultants on their site for 2-4 weeks (and more) during the roll-out of a new accounting system. There can be serious tax issues if the books are set up wrong!

Now I fully understand the software, John. [:j]

Tell me, though, did the software company install it for yours, or was the installation done in house?!

You see, I' ve been asked to create a website before the end of the year for a company that uses it. They want me, I repeat, ME, to integrate it into the site. Don' t know whether to laugh or cry. I keep telling them it is something I may not be able to do, but they insist they want me to do the site. Oy vey.:)

Doug, I posted to John before I saw yours; my email was out this morning and I didn' t get a subscription notice.

The company is quite substantial, dollar wise anyway. The owner indicates that the MAS90 software folk do all the setting up. My question is whether I am able to integrate it into a site, since according to the owner, there is really nothing for me to do with functionality of the program. But I' ve been told things by clients before, only to find out we were talking about two different things.

Right now I' m looking for some very basic background info. Although I' m doing some work for the client now, more serious talk about the MAS90 stuff may be a few months or so away. Don' t want to spend too much time until then.

If and when this is a go, I may need to find another web developer to work with me on the job. I' m no tech guru, believe me! And I much rather turn down a job than bs malarkey my way through. Not fair to the client, or me.

I suppose an illustration, though a poor one, would be this: If I were a house builder and the client asked me to put in a garage (website), I could do so. And they could put their car (MAS90)in it...but I know nothing about how the car works. :)

Whaddya think?

I haven' t touched MAS-90 since maybe 1991, before the www came into existence. I have no idea about website integration, sorry.
