Step by Step Importing a Website - 4/25/2003 23:41:10
Gil had helped me out with this in my early days, and I though it only proper to post it in this section and give him the credit:)

Import simply does not work in FrontPage. So how do you import a website to a computer that the website did not originate on?

Step by step

Open the web by clicking " File - Open"

In the " File name" box type " http://www.yourdomain.com"

Enter your logon & password when prompted

Once the site is open in Frontpage click " File - Publish web

For the address to publish to enter a destination on your harddrive IE: C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\My Documents\My Webs

You should now have a complete copy of the web you can work on.

I guess not being too savy has it' s advantages. I' ve imported 3 or 4 sites using FP import and it has worked fine.

Sity,
You know, I thought it was even less savy of me not to try out your suggestion - so I did and I liked it better than using the import function in FrontPage. Thanks.

Generally restrict use of the Import function to import single files such as .pdf and .doc that will remain as files to be linked to. You may also import .htm (or .html) files created in other programs like Calendar Maker.

In prior versions of FrontPage (e.g. 98, 2000) the import function would allow you to import virtually any website on the net. It started with the home ( index ) page and followed every link, image, file, etc. within the same domain.

In FrontPage 2003 Beta. The import function does nothing like that. I am an expert FP webmaster and have yet to figure out what has happened.

The import function was great IN THE PAST because it allowed you to provide a proper report on the current status of a web to prospective clients who had websites built using html pages.

Hopefully the Beta is the problem and not a deliberate change by MS.

ANy comments or suggestions would be appreciated

I was challenged by this recently when I started using DW at another location.

Here are some outside shareware/freeware utilities to do site importing with:

htcopy at http://www.httrack.com/ - sophisticated w/ forum, etc. open s/w

superbot at http://www.sparkleware.com free for up to 100 files at a time, else has reg. fee.

Help us beginners out here. How does this improve on using ftp such as WS_FTP?
