Title Elements - Page Titles - 4/25/2003 23:47:10
Every html document must have a Title Element in the head section. Some refer to the <title> element as a meta tag (title tag) when it is not. Here is a working example of the title element...

<head>
<title>Title Element - Page Titles</title>
</head>

The above title element example will produce something that looks like this in your Internet Explorer browser title window...

Title Element - Page Titles - Microsoft Internet Explorer

The title element should ideally be less than 64 characters in length. While there is no limit on the length of a title, developers are warned that the title element may be truncated if too long.

Page titles or title elements, are one of the most important factors when developing a search engine friendly web page. The <title> should contain your primary keyword phrase for that page and any secondary phrases that you may be targeting. For example...

<title>Search Engine Marketing Companies in California</title>

Notice that our main keyword phrase Search Engine Marketing Companies is at the beginning of the title. We then added in California at the end since we are targeting a regionally specific group of search engine marketing companies in California.

We typically follow the W3C standards in regards to proper html formatting. Anyone care to share their thoughts on the Title Element?

For more detailed information, we' ve just posted a new page discussing the Title Element and other meta data (META Tags) that are of importance.

From experience I have found that some search engines can list your site differently depending on the placement of the regional part.

In real life users of the search engine may type in

California Search Engine Marketing Companies

which yields different results.

I think that it is a good idea to try a trade of by having the words Search Engine Marketing Companies in California in the title and then the words California Search Engine Marketing Companies in the first block of text in the page.

Smiles as for standards in search engines, if it works well you can bet that if it is not already standard it will soon become a standard.
