Caterer site - let me have it. - 4/27/2003 0:36:30
Here is my latest, it' s a caterer. www.touchef.com

I have all the pages done except the client page. I also know that there are typos and grammer corrections that need to be made still. I' m looking for any glaring problems right now.

Layout, design, colors, readability, etc. and anything else you can think of.

Let me know how you like the graphics also, this is the first site that I' ve done using Photoshop exclusively. I' m a beginner there too.

Thanks for your input and help.

Hi Jim,

Not much to " let you have it" on. The site looks great. There are only two things I have an opinion on. First the size of the Touch' f logo and the Newsletter sign up push your introduction down too much IMHOO. I' d try to get the intro going more quickly. Something like this:
:)
Second I might include some kind of blurb on the " Menu" page rather than just having the image links. Neither are necessary just an opinion on my part.
Again, great job. :)

Hi Jim, from a consumer point of view, if I lived closer I' d be picking up the phone right now and ordering nearly everything :) The site looks great. One thing I' d like to see is the contact phone number on the footer of all pages as this looks like the type of business that people would prefer to telephone straight away (or maybe that' s just me :) ).

Great call on the logo and content, Mike. I tried a couple different ways and here are the best two:

www.homepage_original.htm (original)
www.homepage2.htm (2nd try)
www.touchef.com (3rd try)

Which one is best?

I also agree with the phone number being there in the footer, wattle. It has been added. Must have been asleep when I did the footer. Thanks for the catch!

Any other comments, especially about the pictures would be helpful. Load time and any Netscape comments would be helpful also.

Thanks for your help

Well Jim, I can' t say which one is best but I like copy3 better.:) In IE at 1024 x 768 everything looked and worked great. I did a quick check in NN 4.7 (at 800 x 600) and everything seemed fine also. In Opera 7.0 (either res) there was some funky side to side jumping going on. I didn' t see that load speed was a problem (on a T1 anyway).[:j]

Very nice! :) :)

Jim,

Since you asked for it... I think it' s an absolute stroke of genius to have the first listed client McDonalds. Keep it on top of the list as you continue development of the page.

I suggest that you include links to the the client' s web sites. This might be a bit of a " sales gimmick" for Mike and Scott.

I think you need to look at optimizing the images on the page. In doing a quick check, the total file size for images is about 160k, plus about another 8k for the html.

Total size should ideally be around 60k for acceptable load time. It appears to me you' ve resized those images within FrontPage, and a much better job could be done in a graphics program.

I am now showing 213k for a total on all the images on the page. Seems to have increased.

Right above your menu bar there are six food images. They average 30k each, making that area alone about 180k. With the addition of the logo and menu images the total reaches up there.

Maybe if you can tell us how you are optimizing the images, what program used etc. we can guide you in bringing that file size down to where it should be.

Nancy

ok. I think I got it now. I' m using Photoshop and I" m a real beginner. I go to save for web and otpimize to my hearts content. then save and it asks if I want to replace the existing file with the newly optimized one. I say yes and then it says do you want to revert to the do you want revert to the original. I mistakenly assumed (you know what they say about that) that since it was replaced that the opt image was the original now. NOT!

I renamed them and did it again. It should be better now.

one other question: how do you get people to refresh their browsers when you make updates. Does it do it automatically or is there some command that you can put on your site that does it for them?

:) :) You got them even smaller than I did. How much compression did you use?

Thanks for the help

Not at all, I was just curious as to the compression. I only used 10% on them.

Hi Jim,
Looked at your site with a 26.1 kbps dial-up connection. The Home page loaded in 20 seconds, Menus in 10 and everything else was basically instantaneous. Jim, I have to tell you, I never get a connection above 28.8 and when I hit sites that load as fast as yours, I really appreciate them. Great job! :)

Images looked good to me.

As to refreshing browsers, I have IE 6.0 set to automatically check for newer pages (Tools>Internet Options>Temporary Internet Files Settings>Automatically. You may want to suggest to viewers to refresh their browser. I' m assuming its due to menu changes?

Thanks John, I vote that we take up a collection and get you a cable modem. I guess there isn' t any cable service around you. :) Or at least a horse that will take data to and from the closest isp. :)

You are always there to give some good insight and helpful tips. Thanks.

Have a great weekend everybody.

The only things around us are two neighboring farms, a lot of cows and horses, plus those pesky skunks, my groundhog buddies and Methuselah, the hugh snapping turtle in the waterhole who has likely been here since the earth was created. Fifteen years ago, we finally got a waterline connection, well water prior to that. About thirteen years ago we were able to drop the telephone " party line" . (We had to pick up the phone and listen to see if someone was on the line before we used it.) Still no sewer lines, we use a septic tank. I' ll likely be dead and buried before cable or DSL reaches us. :)

Oh well, I' m procrastinating. The Better Half is at a Kentucky Derby Party and I' m supposed to be working on the " Honey Do List" and not on the computer. I better get something done before she comes home tonight and I have to start thinking of excuses. [:p]
