Is this normal ?? - 5/1/2003 17:00:33
I think i have found a very a relible web host. My question is, that my (6) domains all resolve to one IP address...but the host company has posted this as a rule of thumb: All domains associated with a single account will resolve to the same IP address. To separate the content of one domain from another, customers must implement application script using Active Server Pages (.asp), or Cold Fusion (.cfm) Is this hard to do??...Is this normal ?? Where do I get .asp script to do this ?? Anything I should be careful of ?? Nutz in Midwest

They should take care of the virtual host configuration on the server.

Gil.... Currently I use Feature(less)Price.com (sorry for the slam).... all the sites resolve to one IP address and have not had any problems with their virtual servers on that point. When I go in to FTP (not publish) I see the separate folders, click on the domain name I want to FTP to and its painless. When I go in to publish via FP2002..I don' t have any problems either. So I guess I am confused as to your comment. Can you take a minute out to explain ?? Thanx. Nutz in Midwest

I think what Gil means is that while it is common for domains to share an IP address, ie to be name based rather than IP based sites, it is NOT common, nor would it be in my opinion acceptable, that it should be the responsibility of the client to make this happen. This is something that a host would normally take care of.

Katherine... I understand now, thanx. I do see both your points in that regard and it makes alot of sense. I think I will discuss that with them. They do list the code to do this on a separate page and the instructions...so I guess I have some more sorting out to do to figure out where the code goes etc...never even heard of this situation before. Thank you. Nutz in Midwest

And I totally agree with her comment: " it is NOT common, nor would it be in my opinion acceptable, that it should be the responsibility of the client to make this happen." That' s unbelievable!
