What if YOU want to discontinue doing a website job for a client, for very legitimate reaons? All is amicable but it' s just not the way you work. You could fininsh the job but are no longer interested.

How did you handle it? What did you do in terms of refunding any monies the customer already paid? How did you determine what portion you should keep for youself for all the work you put in? Did you give them the source files?

I did this once. I wanted to get out of the project because I had bigger and better on my plate. I gave all source files to the customer and worked until he had a replacement. I made sure he was happy.

Gail,

Be honest & explain nicely why you are no longer interested in site. (If possible - some cases might be impossible to explain)

In a case like this if bulk is done - I would give it to him or refund all money that was paid to him since I was dropping him.

If you know someone who might be able to take over work - refer him elsewhere.

Since he may know other people - you want to make sure he does not say bad things about you to others - so try to keep it amicable.

I know I have fired clients but there have been very good reasons - I have not kept work they paid for. (If payment is part of issue - I would not give him the work until what he paid for was done.)

I have done this a few times- it' s usually mutual but often the client doesn' t realize he/she is being abusive - expecting much more than a contract or agreement calls for.

I suggest finishing the term of the agreement if possible, with early notification that relationship will terminate on a specific date in the future, giving them lots of time to plan. Obviously, if you are struggling over a design, this is probably not the way to go. In such cases, I would give back ALL the design fees with the stipulation that NONE of the work done be used for ANY reason.
