Which PS books to get? - 5/6/2003 7:12:34
I' m fairly new to PS (I' m using PS 7) and don' t have really any graphics experience besides what I' ve done with Paint Shop Pro 6 (which is very little also). I' m looking for books that will explain the tools and " graphic lingo" in a easy manner as well as give hands on experience with the tools by giving little projects to complete. I' m a visual/hands on learner and reading text makes my head hurt! I have the opportunity to get the following books pretty cheap. PS 6 Bible PS 7 Classroom in a book PS 6 Classroom in a book Adobe Photoshop 6 & 7 Manuals PS Elements user guide and manual My question is, are these books worth getting and will they fit my learning style? Or are they going to be too technical? I would like to become proficient with PS as quickly as possible also ( I know, wouldn' t we all!). If these would not work or you have any other suggestions on how to get into the groove with PS, I would love to hear them. thanks

Try " Inside Adobe Photoshop" . Mine is the limited edition for PS 5. It' s got quite a number of fairly-easy-to-follow examples, plus the obligatory CD containing the images they' ve worked with in the book.

Jim, I just got Adobe PS 7 Studio Techniques by Ben Willmore. I like what I' ve seen and read so far. It purports to be an easy-to-use, hands-on book...we' ll see. I' m a novice with PS so if the book works for me, it probably will work for anyone! BTW: $35 at Amazon. Tony

Hey Jim, I' ve heard good things about the Classroom in a Book series. Also, I just gave one of my learning manuals to someone....I thought it was good, but for PS5.5. I' ll get the name and get that for you. Once you get the basics down, I really love the " Down & Dirty Tricks" by Scott kelby. I leaned lots at a Photoshop World Tour. It was a 3 or 4 day conference a few years back. If you have to time to put into something like this, it is well worth the money and effort. You can learn about this through NAPP(National Association of Photoshop Professionals) They offer this training twice a year I think. bonnie

No don' t get those books if you dont' want to read through a ton of garbage that you will never understand or use. If your like me you like to do tutorials that make you use the program rather than reading a manual. The books you have listed are just that " manuals" . I suggest the books put out by New Riders. Also the Hands On series is great too. Photoshop 7 KillerTips Photoshop 7 Down&Dirty Tricks There is also a great magazine ( Computer Arts ) It' s published in England but easly found in stores like Borders Books. I have the same learning style as yourself and I am a book nut. I am totaly self taught and have the boosk that you have listed but the ones that I use the most are the books that put you through tutorials. Check out the mags and the books I know you will enjoy them......

Wow, Killfast, don' t be so harsh! He wants to learn. I too am a huge fan of the down and dirty tips and tricks, but if he is just starting out, he needs to learn the tools pallette and what they each do first. Photoshop is a huge program that can take you many places. I love it and think it can work miracles. I personally learned with the Classroom in a book to start off with, to learn the tools and basic working of the program. You may not use the entire book, but I went through the whole thing, now I' m certain I skipped alot, but to start out with, you have to know the basics before you can learn the tricks. The Classroom in a Book offers interactive tutorials which can be very helpful. Might I suggest that you go to a big book store, like Barnes and Noble, and look through several different books by varying publishers before you make your decision. Best of luck to you...enjoy your new software! bonnie
