meta name tags - 5/6/2003 15:44:17
I just came across this, and I' m wondering what do these do? In particular the first and third ones.
<meta name=" MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content=" false" >
<meta name=" robots" content=" index,follow" >
<meta name=" revisit-after" content=" 30" >

<meta name=" MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content=" false" > That one turns off MS Smart tags. These were a big Microsoft idea, which was included in some versions of IE6 I believe, that turned words on web pages into hyperlinks that MS could control. I think the idea was they would then ' sell' keywords, which would be linked from your page whether you liked it or not. But bad press got Microsoft to abandon the idea, for now at least. So you don' t really need the tag, though it won' t do any harm. quote:
<meta name=" robots" content=" index,follow" > Tells robots to follow links on your page - which is what they do anyway so it seems a little pointless! quote:
<meta name=" revisit-after" content=" 30" > Instructs robots to return and index your page again in 30 days. Its a waste of time, they will return when they return, on their own aganda, not yours.

It actually tells the robot to index the page and then follow links from that page. Katherine is correct in that this is the default behavior of most indexing spiders or robots and is not required. The revisit tag is a myth. One that has been perpetrated over the years. The indexing spiders will visit your pages based on their schedule, not a schedule that you set. Just imaginee if we could control how frequently a spider indexed our site. Think abuse! Click here for more information on the Robots META Tag. There is a use for this tag when you do not have access to set up a robots.txt file. The main purpose for the Robots META Tag is to prevent spiders from indexing content.
