mp3 formats - 5/8/2003 14:15:48
Hi everyone,

Didn' t know where else to ask this since it really isn' t a FP or even a web question, but I have grown to trust you guys and know that there is a lot more people out there that know a lot more than me. So here goes...

I' m about to change computers and motherboards. I want to save all my music that is on my hd so I can so I don' t lose it with the transfer. How can I archive it in data format so it can be just loaded back into my folders once the transfer is complete. And so I don' t have to rerip every stinkin song (about 600).

The last time I did it, I just saved to a disk and then all the songs were screwed up when I tried to play them after the upgrade and I had to start all over again.

thanks

i' ve had success burning MP3s to CD-Rs...an inexpensive way to backup anything on your HD, including MP3s...

if you dont have a CD-RW, i highly suggest getting one. you can get a relatively good one for quite cheap these days, and they are not hard to install yourself...

i use Nero Burning ROM, but most of the programs these days that burn CDs are similar...most have a wizard setting that walks you thru the process...

i just removed all my songs from my HD for the room (I am going to reformat my HD and clean install Win 2k Pro...i would go to XP, but then i couldn' t use my LaserJet IIIp)...

you have 600 songs, at about 4MB/song, that' ll take about 4 full CD-Rs (at 700MB/CD-R)...but if you' re like me, they' re categorized, and you want to keep them that way...it took me about 7-8 CD-Rs to get about 3.5 GBs of MP3s off my HD...

I have a burner and that' s what I did last time and they didn' t work. What settings should I use when I burn them onto a disk is the real question I guess.

saved as data.

I have a 8X4X32X cd writer

Don' t laugh - I have a PII 300 with 312Ram - I said, don' t laugh. That' s the reason for the upgrade. Hey, I said..... don' t laugh! :)

I' m using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 which I have only had for a little while and usually only use my burner for data archiving and burning of music cd' s not burning mp3 files as data.

What read and write speeds should I use and any other settings that I should know about. Should I use the direct cd method to just drag and drop the files onto my writer or some other method?

I just did a test one with the drag and drop feature on Roxio and this came up at the end. which choice should I use?

:)

If I were you, I' d take the old drive out of your PC and stick it into your new PC as a slave to your new hard drive; this is no more difficult than fitting a CDR and has the added benefit of keeping the files on a second (backup) hard drive.

You could copy them to your new one from here if you wished to, the copying process being much quicker from hard drive to hard drive.

I like to keep a second hard drive in my PC for this very reason; it' s a quick backup that will keep my files safer in the event of a drive crash.

If you need any help, check on the web or give me a shout.

About the dialogue box:

the third choice makes the CD read only; do this if it' s full and you want to use the CD in another PC. If you reckon you can squeeze some more data on the CD and are only using it in the writer at the moment then tick the first option.
