Back again for another critique - 5/10/2003 16:25:42
Hi all,
After doing some MAJOR rework on our site, I' d like your input please.
Current site www.mwbcr.org
Revised site (I go live day after Father' s day if all is ok) www.mwbcr.org/testhome.htm
I' m having problems with the swaped photo coming up in Netscape. Is this common?

2 quick comments from a non-technical point of view - took me a while to figure out how to get anywhere from the home page. The mouse over is cute, once you find it, but not everyone will. You may have to eshew artistry and add " Click here to enter" .

On the subsequent page, so much real estate was taken up buy the header that you actually had to scroll down to read the important part ...

Just my 10 cents worth. :)

Is there more than one page?

Thanks for the 10 cents. :) I really appreciate it and will do as suggested. There are more pages. The contents box on the left side list the pages.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Mel,

With the long pages, I suggest that you place navigation links at the bottom of the pages.. Such as: Home, Back, Next.

My first thought when I clicked on " Available BCs" was that I had inadvertently been directed to another web site. Then, I discovered that all pages leave one with this feeling. I suggest many viewers like the same " looky-feely" from page to page on a site.

The jumpy links on the left are distracting. They don' t work in NN 7 and Opera 7 — Much better.

I would also add " Alt Text" to the images.
The following quote shows repeated font descriptors. Unless you are going to change, the style will remain from paragraph to paragraph.

<font face=" Arial" size=" 2" style=" font-weight: 700" >
Before thinking about adopting a Border Collie, we strongly recommend you learn
all you can about this highly intelligent breed. Simply put, a Border Collie is
not your average pet. They are not cuddly lap dogs content with being indoors…</font></p>

Hmmm, didn' t see a " contents box" - just a doghouse inder a text box and a logo. Love the logo BTW[:p]

Charles, are you suggesting I add the links to the bottom of the page AND keep them on top or remove them from the top?

My goal for the up for adoption page was to have a background that made the dogs leap out at you. Should all the pages have the same background? Thanks for the help.

Gil, if you click on the dog house, you' ll be taken to the next page

Mel
PS That logo is a pain to work into the site.

Ahhh, I see you added a ' click to enter" also:)

OK, I got in - question: Why have that first page? I don' t see where it serves a pupose other than have a visitor take an extra step to view your site?

Gil, I wanted to do something a little different then the other rescue sites. There are a number of them in this area and I was hoping to set us apart, not only in our deeds, but our site as well. Was I wrong? Do I need to keep it same ' ol same ' ol?
I' m currently changing all the headings so they' re all the same size, except, of course, the pages that have a border background.

I can' t tell you how much your input means. It' s nice to have some " experience" guiding me.

You guys are the best,
Mel

Mel,

Because of the extremely long pages, I would have them at both the top and the bottom.

I watch folks during our computer club' s class offerings. The biggest stumbling block for the students is the lack of obvious navigation. Scrolling itself is a detriment, especially horizontal scrolling (I didn' t notice any on your site.)

I would also include intemeciate links to the top of the page. Simply enter the word " Top" and hyperlink to the bookmark " #top" (without the quotes)

The ALT attribute (alternative representation) for images is a required element - Right click on an image and choose Picture properties - then on the General tab you' ll see a place to enter the alternative representation text

That' s your call - personally, I feel you can ' do sometyhing a little different' without the extra step. I like the cute doghouse with the mouseover effect, but I would have a lot more content on the index page and maybe have the mouse over say ' click here for more" or something like that.

Well, the first thing I would recommend is to do away with the all the borders. They are very distracting. Plus, you should always use pictures to attract your visitors to a certain area, the clip art just doesn' t do it for me. The way the page is situated makes it hard for me to read what' s going on also.

I' d recommend getting rid of all those borders and having more photos or pictures of collies. Remember, you' ve got a couple of seconds to grab visitors attention. Just a few pictures can explain what your whole site is about if done right.
