Well I suppose this probably depends on what is being used as the definition of a web. *S* Have you actually created independent " webs" as defined by FrontPage, or just made folders within one main web?

For each directory, or as Windows calls it - folder, you can and probably should have an index page, or what would be considered a starting page for that section. If you want each of those sections to be independent you definitely would want an index page for that directory. Without an index page, you then need to refer to the directory name plus whatever page you want to be the starting page when you make links. Personally I would rather just put a link to the directory and let the server produce (or serve) what is the default page automagically.

The purpose of that index page is to serve as the starting point for each of your directories/folders, and I don' t think you want to be without them.

Hi again Nancy.......they are independent Webs with totally different content and not related to one another. What happens is that I open Front Page and click on File>New>Web and right away FP throws an index.htm up there in the folder list. Then when I save the page, and give it a name, lets say it is " form1.htm" and then I create a hyperlink to a new page and save that and it is " form2.htm" . So now I am done and there is that index.htm still sitting up there with nothing in it.

Prior to yesterday when I set up the PWS and set up the extensions on my host server, I was using FTP to load my pages so none of this mattered in that I created a directory on my host server and loaded whatever files I wanted. Now with using the FP publish feature, it is a whole new ball game and a bit different for me in that I am not creating just one web with multiple pages. I am not sure yet just how to go about doing this. I imagine that I will have to go into the file manager on my host site and set up a folder to accomodate the files that I will upload using publish. Any thoughts on this??

Hi Gil......I have one Personal Computer and one web host running Linux/Apache. I want to create an individual new web in Front page on about 30 different subjects. I don' t want to link any of these webs to each other and I want them all in one destination directory in separate folders on the host server like you see below (cars,fishing,women) This is the best description that I can give of what I am trying to do.

The host server=http;//gskywalkers.myserver.net/my30webpages/cars/cars.htm
The host server=http;//gskywalkers.myserver.net/my30webpages/fishing/fishing.htm
The host server=http;//gskywalkers.myserver.net/my30webpages/women/women.htm

I found out this morning that I can do this by going into the control panel on the server and creating a new folder named cars or fishing or women and then publish to that location. My question at this point is whether or not front page has a way of creating those folders like I was able to do with FTP?

Also would like to know if there is a procedure for deleting the results text that a form generates on the host server? I read so much about corrupted extensions and so I hesitate to delete anything for fear it will do just that.

no need for the 30webpages directory

Okay, question Gil.

Now that we are slowly getting so we are all on the " same page" , I have a question. gskywalkers is set up as a subdomain on a server, rather than as his own domain.

The question: Do most servers allow sub-webs (using the MS terminology) with subdomains?? Just curious, as I' ve never tried it.

Yes, subdomains and subwebs are two totally different things.

I' ve been successful with most servers in just publishing to that folder, and then the server responds that there isn' t a web at that location, do I want to create one? I click yes, and it makes the folder for me and the publishing completes. I' ve never had to go to any sort of file manager panel, or use FTP to make the folder first. However, this has been publishing to a domain, not a subdomain.

Secondly, if you are considering having your own domain and paid hosting service in the near future, this might be a good time to make that change. Otherwise, you' ll possibly need to make additional changes in how you publish when you do make that change.

Should just be a directory under root is gskywalkers account - I believe he said he was on a Linux/Apache box, so no problem there. Assuming it' s configured right.

It' s me again......I was able to successfully publish a new web to a folder that previously did not exist simply by adding the new folder name to the end of the " publish to url" . It did not stop and ask about the new folder, it just went ahead and added it. So that is another problem solved.

One last question before I start my new web called " Wildones" . I am still hung up on this index.htm thing. I click on File>New>Web and it opens a new front page web which I will call Wildones. Immediately on the left in the folder list it created some folders and " index.htm" . Up on the top of the blank pane is shows new_ page_2. Ok, next I create some wild text and some wildone pics and I click on save. Here I change the Title and give the new_page_2 a name called daisy_mae. At this point my web is done because one wild woman is enough so I am ready to publish. Now unless I somehow do this differently, that index.htm file is empty so are you saying to publish it empty? or I am doing it wrong and we have to put something in it? or just what is the purpose of it " in my instance" ?

Your index.html page is the first and main page in any of your subwebs/directories/whateveryoucallthem - so it must exist and it needs to have some content - You can make a index page that just has links, like daiseymae, bridget, natalie, sweety, etc or it can have some content and links - up to you. When you

Whooo Hooooooo!!! Looking good!! Works exactly like it should.

If you have a new_page_2 upon creating a new web, you can just close and not save it, and then just double click on the index page that FrontPage created and start adding content to it, or as Gil say, you can save as.. and use the index file name. FrontPage will likely want to use the .htm extension rather than .html Just make sure you don' t have both!!

Just one final ittybitty thing to keep in mind. I don' t mean to be picky, but since you seem to be in the middle of doing a lot of reorganizing of your site, here' s a little tip to follow:

Make your folder and file names all lower case, no spaces. In the example you have done, it all looks good, except for the " W" Some servers are very picky about this, so if you will always use lower case and no spaces, you should not ever have any problems if you ever change servers.

If I were a teacher, I would put a big blue star on your work. Remember those in Kindergarten?? Oh nevermind - this is for another topic. [;)]

By the way, the above can also be like this:

This is one reason it is important to have an index page, so that the site will open without having to put a page name.

And here is why it is important to consistently use lower case
