It is my understanding that Windows 98 SE comes with the extensions to run a Personal Web Server but that I could only run Front Page 2000 and have everything work. Is there anyone who can tell me if this is correct and how I would go about doing this?

Both the original Windows 98 (Win98) and Windows 98 Second Edition (Win98SE) CD-ROMs have the Microsoft PWS 4.0 on them, but it is not installed by default when you install Win98. You must manually install MS PWS 4.0 by running the following file from the Win98 or Win98SE CD-ROM: \add-ons\pws\setup.exe.

Hi Gil, Thanks for the help. I ran the file Win98 CD-ROM: \add-ons\pws\setup.exe and I now have the PWS working, however, when I try to publish to the designated http location, it says that I don' t have the server extensions and wants to use the FTP utility instead. So my question at this point is how do I get the extensions? Are they not part of the Win98SE CD-ROM: \add-ons\pws\setup.exe that I just installed?

Wow, it' s been so long since I' ve seen PWS, I don' t remember - but I " think" you need to download the extensions from MS

isn' t there a button in PWS that says something like " activate extensions" or something....

The server extensions should be installed along with PWS. Adding them is part of the PWS 4 setup. However a newer version that matches your FP version is best.

You need to publish to a url, not a disk location, something like http://localhost/myNewWeb

You can download the current version Frontpage Server Extensions from the Microsoft website. The FP2000 server extensions should be on your FP2000 cd but there have been quite a few updates since FP2000.

Back again.....I was able to install the extensions. I was on a microsoft page that said to run " MMC" from the commmand line and that worked for me. It brought up a wizard that ran me through the process. So now I have the personal web server running on Windows 98 with the extensions and Front Page 2000 but it' s still not working correctly. Just as Doug G says, it requires that I publish to a URL....in my case http://walker as that is how it was setup. It publishes to that location ok but I tried installing a simple Front Page hit counter and it does not work on the published page. Anyone have any ideas why not?

I tried to publish to http://127.0.0.1/ and in the process I lost the publish function completely. I am running Go Back to the start of today and see if I can' t make this work the second time around.

With a page open in Front Page, the publish function was greyed out. I have no idea why it was like that. Anyway, I removed everything with go back and put it all back in again. Then I tried to publish to that same address you gave me and it says there are no server extensions installed on the server you are trying to publish to.

Follow up.......I guess if I had not forgotten to install the extensions on the second go around, it would have worked and surprisingly after I installed the extensions, it does work. Thanks for all your help. This should make it much better for testing my pages before publishing to the web.

I still need more help with this[:D] I have the PWS up and running and the extensions installed and I can create and publish a form in Front Page and then navigate to this form in PWS and fill in the questions but I can' t seem to be able to find the page that contains the answers to the form. I am looking for it on http://walker/form/_private/form_results.txt Also, is there any way to delete the answers that are on this page if and when I find it?

form_results.txt should be in Inetpub/wwwroot/walker/form/_private Did you look there?

Hi Gil.....I found the file Inetpub/wwwroot/walker/form/_private but it is empty so I guess the form itself is not working. I will have to go back and mess with it some more.

Back one more time. The form was not sending it to the right place so I have that fixed and it all seems to work ok on the PWS. Next question is when I publish it to my Web Host server, where does the results page reside?

It should still go to the _private folder on the server...

Ok......I have all of the local issues ironed out and PWS is working correctly. The next thing I did was to install the extensions on my host server. Pretty simple really, just pushed a button that says install front page extensions. It whizzed and whirred for a bit and then pumped me out a notice that the extensions were installed. This caused some serious changes in the way I was normally loading pages with FTP and having to switch to HTTP but I guess I got through it ok because the pages loaded using the publish feature on Front Page. The main thing that concerns me now is that the minute I installed those extensions, anyone who goes to any of my pages can simply back up to the home page and it will give them an index of every image and page I ever made. It didn' t used to do that. Any way to fix this??

Do you not have a index.html page?

IIS actually doesn' t include index.html in the default document list in PWS4, probably only default.htm is there.

anyway in the IIS service manager (probably in the PWS manager too but I never could figure out how PWS manager works) you can set what file(s) are " default" files for your web folder, i.e., which ones open automatically if the user browses to the folder without specifying a file. Set the default files to what you want and make sure there is one of the default files present in the folder.

Also, there is a web setting to allow/prohibit directory browsing, which will give you a " forbidden" error if there is not default file present.

You guys are going to have to shoot a little lower because most of that is whizzing right over my head[:D]

The following are the options I see when I open my isp file manager:
htmltemplates 755
htpasswds 755
neomail 700
trash 700
catalogs 755
etc 755
index.html 755
mail 770
public_ftp 755
public_html 755
tmp 700
www 755

There is nothing in the index.html folder and when I put something there I can' t go see it either in the file manager or on the net. Either that or I dont know how to get to it.

When I put the same file in public_html, I can go see it on the net. Inside the public_html folder there is the option " home" and that seemed good to me so thats where they are.

What I would like to know is where I should load my pages to?? Right now I have them all in the the public_html folder. The path looks something like this

http;//gskywalkers.myserver.net/home/myhomepages.htm

The only problem I have with this is when you delete everything after the words http;//gskywalkers.myserver.net......it gives you a list of everything including the label on my grandmothers underwear!!!!!

I have about 30 webs so any one of them could be made the homepage. So an additional question about that is: if I am not going to make but one homepage, is it necessary to have and index.htm with each web??

I' ve never seen a directory named index.html - where did that come from? You ' site' belongs in the public_html directory and there should be a page named either index.html or default.html in that directory.
Are you saying when you published you enter the path http://gskywalkers.myserver.net/home/myhomepages.htm? If so that' s the problem the URL you ned to enter into Frontpage to publish is http://gskywalkers.net - unless you are publishing to a web server on the same machine then publisj to http://127.0.0.1/gskywalkers

What OS server? What web server? Yours or a host? Where located?

Plus the premissions are all wrong....

Inside that same directory where my homepage is, there are quite a few other things as follows.
start.htm<<<<<<<< this is my home page

I think we' ve sort of changed horses midstream here. *S*

The initial problem dealt with using PWS for development, but your latest problems - seeing a directory listing of everything, has nothing to do with PWS, but with your hosting service, which is probably Unix/Linux as it is using Apache.

I can see what is happening on your site. You don' t have an index page. Each hosting service whether it is Windows or Unix/Linux will accept only certain pages as the initial starting page, and you apparently don' t have one of the accepted names. " start.htm" is usually not one of those accepted, and that seems to be what you are calling yours. You' ll need to rename it and publish again. You do have something called index.html/ but it has been turned into a directory not an htm page, possibly because you put a slash.

I would suggest renaming start.htm to index.htm and publish and see if that fixes some things. I would use the option to publish changed pages only, so you don' t overwrite what is currently on the server.

Bingo !!!!!!! That did it Nancy......thanks so very much to everyone[:D] I had tried earlier to publish that page calling it index.html but it would not let me write to it but it worked using index.htm. I still have that one question still unanswered about index.htm and that has to do with any new webs that I create all have that index.htm file put in there by FP. Is there any purpose for that file? Can I delete that file or can I just ignore it. It just seems that I would have index.htm' s all over the place.
