Page titles - 5/17/2003 2:08:23
Hi,

How significant are page titles to search engine placement, and as a searching tool?:)

What will changing the name of a page do to its search status? Will it dissappear completly, and re-emerge later? :)

If concise and thorough page titles are important, what shoulld I do to counteract the negatives of page name changing? Re-dirrects? If so, please tell me how. :)

VERY. They are one of the main key ingredients to a highly ranked page for free placment.

The next cycle of the bot/spider will take it into account and hopefully you will get a ranking boost for it.

This is were you can get creative.

I like using a static site map with a lot of text. This will also help your above question as you are handing your site on a silver platter to the bot if done right.

You can also do a redirect. How would depend on what platform you are on being IIS or Apache.

Search engine spiders give page titles a lot of value, so it' s worth taking the time to create keyword titles for each and every page on your site. This doesn' t mean the same title repeated on every page across your site, but a different title for each page. Each page title should focused on what is on that page. This can help ensure that you list all the possible keywords on your site

Page titles also get listed on a search engines result page and consequently are what searchers will look at. If the title is appealing hopefully they will click on it.

When you change page titles they will still get picked up if you keep the page name the same. So your old work should not get lost.

From your explaination, what I should not change is the page name, which is the url of the page. Page titles, however, can and should evolve to reflect ...

If that is wrong or partly right, please let me know.

Thank you for your tutelage through the years. :)

Exactly right.:)

You should not change the page name, which is the url of the page. Page titles, however, can and should evolve to reflect what is on page.

I am going into an aside here...

Before I even touch my build tools I grab a piece of paper. I " map" the site out on paper. I determine what content (all) should be in what sub directories. I then figure out the keywords for that chunk of content and name the directory utilizing the keyword. I also name pages of content to something relevant/utilizing keywords.

I feel this helps in the overall SEO puzzle.
