FrontPage & Win2003 server Upgrade - 5/21/2003 23:52:52
My host just upgraded most of his servers to Windows 2003 ILLS-6 Immediatly all the DBR pages I have written in the past two years quit working. An error message appears at each instance of a DBR! Something about, " Syntax error in Query. Incomplete Query Clause" .. After three days of puzzling and talking to Microsoft he finally moved my large site to a non-upgraded server. Works fine! I have another small site on a server that has been upgraded. You can see the database result at http://USSArikara.com/shipscrew.asp The techs are knowledgebale, friendly and try to help. Theit knowledge of FrontPage though is not high. Also they have been plagued by hundreds of trouble calls since the conversion of 12 of their 30 or so servers.

Does anyone know the answer to this?? These database' s all ran well before the upgrade! FrontPage and Windows are both Microsoft products. Don' t they talk to each other??

The short answer is " not necessarily!"

Look at this page http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/frontpage/servers.asp

And here was some relevant discussion http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/tm.asp?m=136032

Your host will need either " Server Extensions for FrontPage 2002" or " SharePoint Team Services" installed and configured correctly for the DRW pages to work...

Brave host! Win2003 server is barely gold code...

Rian :)

Rian is right. And brave host indeed. I don' t know why any host would rush to upgrade to 2003 without testing first.

Just to give a little history. Remember when XP came out? MS didn' t want to confuse people with calling the server version XP as well so marketing called them .Net servers as if that didn' t cause a lot of confusion. No one knew what the heck a .Net server was. .Net wasn' t selling very well and it was plagued with issues. Hmmm what to do... They rebranded them tweaked the code a tad and now it is called Windows Server 2003. And host' s are rushing out to upgrade? Makes me wonder sometimes.

If I was the host I wouldn' t move any web sites on to 2003 until I contacted the owner of the site and did my homework and informed them of the possible repurcussions.

But that' s just me......

Here is a copy of the latest e-mail from Webstrike Solutions, my Web host..

" we do have a workaround for the FrontPage issue, but if you use any full paths in your code (e.g. d:\yourdomaincom) then you will need to change it, as the problem with FrontPage is that instead of setting security and everything else on files within the virtual server, the bug is that it attempts to do this on the parent path (e.g. in our setup d:\websites) which obviously is no good. So what we can do to get them working is put all your files into d:\websites\yourdomaincom\wwwroot and map your home directory to that. Let me know if you' d like me to do that."

I told them to give it a try, (thinking that i might understand a little of what they are saying). Sounds like a " Short Time" fix though to me.
