Help Learning Something New - 5/23/2003 11:45:52
Hi there,
I wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction. I am up for learning something new and not sure where to look for instructions.
I want to put a " quote of the day" on a web page and have it automatically be a different quote pulled from a data base of quotes everyday. What would it take to do this? I know how to set up a data base with the quotes, but what should I be reading up on to have the one record show up daily and either be randomly picked or the next one in a sequence?
I just recently learned about the " Substitution" feature and am just buzzed to do more of this sort of thing to make life easier.
I am using Frontpage 2000 and don' t know the html thing. I also have the book - FrontPage Bible2000.

Mike I took your advice and downloaded the script from the first link you suggested. I looks easy. I have been working with this all last night and off and on today. Remembering that things like asp just means a file extension to me...
I installed the two pages of the download into a new directory called Includes. Updated the directory path in the code. Published it and the page that is suppose to show the quote of the day at this location http://www.lighttravels.com/includes/quote.asp ... returns the error pasted below. Since I actually don' t know what I am doing in terms of this scripting language I just tried all options on line 19 including deleting the line - but nothing works.
Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

I just spent about an hour playing with the Freekot files and it' s actually fairly easy. It' s just a matter of configuring the path to the database correctly.

Perhaps freekot2 would be a better choice????
It sure looks like an easy thing to accomplish - set up a text file of quotes/set up an .asp include page that randomly gets a quote each day/insert the include page where you need it on your various web pages.
