Mike McHenry -> Seeking alternative to PWS for XP Home (5/25/2003 13:57:31)

Greetings,

My XP-Home version does not support " Personal Web Server" . I wish to acquire a substitute local web host to reside on my computer.

Your suggestion(s) are much appreciated.

Regards,

Mike McHenry

Hi Mike, Welcome to the forums!

If you do a search online you will find some that you can dowload onto your computer.

I did a bit of a search for you just to get you started.

try to match the webserver that your host uses. in other words, if your host uses linux/apache then you should check the windows apache server. this may not be entirely possible if your host uses windows. if that is the case then it is highly recommended that you upgrade to XP Pro and use the Microsoft IIS server that is included with that.

the reason for this is that the two platforms are not very compatible in the areas of file locations and naming, and some of the features that they support.

If you want to do any work with asp, an upgrade to XP Pro to get IIS5.1 the best (and about the only) way to go.

I downloaded " Mini-Portal" to replace P.W.S and it works ok.

Do you have a URL for that Mike?

Might this be the one?

You can make IIS 5.0 run on Windows XP if you have Windows 2000 CD. You' ll find a thred at http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/tm.asp?m=33074&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=windows%2Cxp%2Chome&language=single&tmode=&smode=&s=#33075.

Also, do a Google search--you' ll find more instructions.
