Hi Pat,

There is one here.

http://simplythebest.net/scripts/dhtml_script_103.html

Just follow the instructions they give you. Some people don' t like this sort of thing however. It may turn them off a bit.

As always, keep the author and source info intact when using free gratis scripts.

Second that! :)

I liken it to eating in a resteraunt where all the silverware have a 3 foot tall, hot pink feather sticking up from the handle...

While the novelty is cool for a minute or two, it gets pretty annoying when you' re tying to enjoy a meal...

I actually agree w/ya' ll...but my client (my brother) wants it on our site.
A customer told him about it and now he wants it.
What can I do? My brother is bigger than me.

Keep track of the logs and when traffic goes to nothing you can say, " I told you so" :)

Pat G, to take such a professional design and destroy it with a trailing cursor is almost a sin. This technique rates right up there with the ole' blink attribute, eek!

This article from Jakob Nielsen dated May 1996 still stands true today.

I just leave if I meet anything like this.

But then we may well be a pickier bunch than the average visitor.

It would be interesting to keep an eye on the logs though. Especially the average number of page views per visitor. If that drops..... I think you know what to blame!

I really dislike mouse effects.
I shop on ebay from time to time and I refuse to buy anything from anyone who has a mouse effect!!

If I encounter them on a website I always leave.

Check your logs for the time spent on the page. I bet is drops!!!!

What a very nice site, clear crisp, easy to find information on - I hope you don' t add such an annoying " feature" to every page.

But " the client is always correct" - still it is a pity. It would be a good idea to study your logs. Maybe ask the client who is so much bigger and stronger than you " is it worth possibly losing business by including this?" Just a thought - again my congratulations on a very nice design.

I' m going to be a little sarcastic here...

Why not use a Comet Cursor and force the visitor to download the Comet Cursor Software to see your professional cursor effects. This would be a perfect compliment to the trailing cursor effect.

I' m just kidding. But, Comet Cursor, trailing cursors, blinking text, etc. are all on the top ten things of what not to do when designing a web site.

Hey Pat,

Maybe you can dissuade the big guy by doing a printable version of this thread and letting him read it.:)[:p]

I changed that for my Ad agency a long time ago to:
" The client is always the client - right or wrong"

I' m stealing that!

I find the mouse effect pretty annoying...

I' ve only been to one website where I was amused by it... it was a comedian, don' t recall his name... not a big name...

His site had the same mouse trailer, but it said " Isn' t this the most annoying thing you' ve ever seen on a website?"

It made me laugh, I actually surfed a while before never going back again...
