Best way to FTP ? - 5/30/2003 17:16:48
kind of a weird question but:
I have an IIS 5.0 server in-house and I have a few options to upload but I do not have FTP running so what is the best or better way to publish my files to the server ?
1. FTP
2. Front Page
3. webDav
4. SourceSafe

I edit with Dreamweaver and have been having tons of Frontpage Extensions issues that we just want to get rid of.

Thanks !

if you don' t run the FTP server

and you don' t like the FrontPage extensions

-cross out 1 and 2

webdav is an exciting protocol, and I believe DW can use it. A short search turned this up...
quote:

In order to transfer Active Server Pages (ASP) and ColdFusion (CFML) files using Dreamweaver UltraDev' s WebDAV protocol support features and Microsoft Internet Information Server, specific and careful configuration through the IIS Management Console is required.
note the word careful!

And Source Safe, I have no idea...

My experience with the W2K server is that you need to run pretty much everything MS to get these features working. IE, to get Active Directory or DFS to work the server also needs a DHCP server, a DNS server, etc. running. Now here' s the catch. If you run all of these servers and the computer crashes, oh my what a mess. You will basically need two W2K servers, and some way to keep them sync' d, (W2K) can do it, with it' s replication, but it still gets real complicated...

FTP in the IIS console is for serving file thru FTP - you can still FTP to the server. The easiest way? Depends on the user - from the command prompt is hard to beat for ease...
