Cannot open anything for writing!! - 6/3/2003 11:37:14
I' m getting the old " cannot open *.*" for writing on my new server. It used to be a common problem with the service.lck file which was an easy fix. I am now getting the error on every single page on the server. Most of my web authors cannot make changes at all. Although some can....my authors use FrontPage 2002 and Visual Studio 6. They both get the same error, cannot open for writing.

I' ve tried recalculating the web. I' ve tried renaming the files. I' ve tried removing permissions through FrontPage. I' ve tried deleting .lck files. none of these help at all.

There is one thing that helps, run FrontPage or VS 6 from a win2000 machine. Unfortunatley we' ve all just gotten new bleeding edge XP boxes.....

Help???

What is your server running?

Version of FP extensions?

If the problem is only from XP boxes there might be a permissions or Authentication problem..... Are the XP boxes part of a AD?

Rian :)

whoops, sorry...

the server is win2000 advanced

FP2002 extensions

the XP boxes are part of a AD, the web server they are authoring to is not.

a microsoft tech article gave this nice clue " This error does not occur on machines running FP 2002 on win2000" they are right, it doesn' t. now how to fix it.....???

Thanks.....I' m starting to think a full rip and reinstall of the server extensions might be in order.

Me too, on IIS5, Win2000Pro, FP2003 locally. I use it for local testing.
I recently upgraded to FP2003, but the problem appears to have surfaced following the recent batch of MS patches.

Well I finally solved my problem - after days of fruitless install/uninstall:)
If you use FP2002 extensions and you open the Sharepoint Admin page ypu may find that the version shows 6.x.x.x, whereas the proper version to use is 5.x.x.x and so you get the message that the admin program is too old or not compatible when you try to use the mmc.
To get the extensions working as the proper version, in FP open your website via http:, then using Tools, recalculate the hyperlinks and your version will (should) switch to 5.

You can then administer from the Sharepoint html pages.

NB Win2KPro, FP2003 and IIS5

Phew, now going to lie down in a darkened room....
