CSS not taking effect in preview mode - 6/5/2003 23:32:34
I have used css successfully on one Web site and am using it to costruct another. I attached my new style sheet to one new page and it operates perfectly. When I attached it to another new page, it works in the normal view, but when I preview, all of the formatting is gone. What am I missing? Thanks for any help.

Without seeing the page it really is not possible to make even a wild guess at this. It is odd that it works in normal view and not preview though.

Any chance of a URL?

Hi,

This sounds weird I know but I had the same issue VERY intermittently on a web that I did. Some pages looked fine in normal mode some did not reflect the external CSS file in normal mode. I removed the external CSS reference in my <head>. I then saved the page. Then I added it back and it would clear up.

Not very factual but...

Use the refresh button on Frontpage' s toolbar - that usually does it. It is important to remember that Frontpage maintains a local cache and that sometimes it gets a little bit confused.

If that does not fix it I have no further suggestions, as I have found the preview to be not 100% accurate and now invariably preview in a browser.

I hope this helps a little

I' ll agree with gorilla, it has to do with FPs caching function. What I do to get around this is save the page and then close it. Browse to that page via IE or whatever browser you are using, hit refresh/reload and then reopen the page. All should be fine.

Since I work live all the time (through IEs Edit function), I have FP open in open in one window and the site open in IE in another window. When I run into caching problems, I close the page in FP, refresh the page in IE, and then come back and open that page in FP, this corrects or updates the cache.

P.S. The above works around that Refesh Button that gorilla refers to as it does not always work. Another option would be to go to...

Tools > Web Settings > Advanced > Temporary Files > Delete Files

And then come back and use the FP Refresh button.

A little note about the FP caching feature. If you are working locally, which I' ve not done in quite some time, you may find that dumping FP' s Temporary Files every now and then might correct some saving issues you may experience. As I mentioned above, I work live through the Edit function of IE and not locally. So, I have the browser cache to work with and if I make a change to my CSS file and cannot get it to update in FPs Preview Mode, all I need to do is close the page, refresh my IE and then come back and open that page in FP, all is well.

Keep in mind that the PREVIEW tab is NOT a browser....it mimics a browser. If you want to have a sure idea of a Broswer Preview click on File - Preview In Browser
