What are some of the tricks, workarounds, tactics, call them what you will, for adjusting line spacing or spacing between various elements. I' m not ready to go to CSS yet, so I need to make due with the limitations of table-based layout. I have been playing around with this today, and I can' t find an easy way to accomplish my objective. It seems that I either need to create a spacer gif or a spacer table when I need precise adjusting. Any ideas?

That would be your best bet, a spacer.gif...

Please excuse my low knowledge on FP and graphics, but what is a " spacer gif" ?

What is the function of spacer gif?

A spacer.gif is a transparent graphic is GIF format, of a specific size to ensure the placement of certain attributes on the page. Some browsers do not interpret empty cell' s sizes so a spacer.gif is used, it is also used to space out other elements at the discretion of the webdesigner....

Using a table instead of a spacer gif gives you the advantage of adjusting the cell spacing as needed. To get around the browser interpretation issue, type in a series of " X' s" , then change the text color to agree with the background color. In effect, this action makes the table " transparent" .

Think carefully before doing this - if the Googlebot picks up text the same color as the background it may interpret it as an attempt to spam, and would not be a happy little bot.

Hitting the space bar a few times should have the same effect. It does not give you the fine control a spacer.gif will though.

- And why would you want to add extra data for the server/user to parse, further this will really mess up your code. Insert a spacer.gif in the cell, creating the spacer.gif the exact size the blank cell needs to be. Good catch about the SPAM issue....not many realise how that is an impediment.

- Remeber that not everone sees a SPACE as the same amount of SPACE based on dpi rendering and resolution, so your alignment can be off if you employ this tactic, be prepared that it may not be 100% effective....close but not 100%

I have been building my very first website using FP 2002. I finished the web project and then try previewing it. I was getting misalignments in text, pictures, and objects. I learned very quickly that using tables is where to go when placing in things in line.

Beside tables, are there other things do I need to be aware of, so that the components and objects will be in the appropriate place when viewed on other people computers?

I realized people will use different browsers, monitor settings, and OS.

Start with Tables and the work from there. You may want to look into CSS to see about formating certain attributes of you site. http://www.w3schools.com/ is the best resource for that....

Using FP2002 to build web-

I' ve noticed that text size are different when viewing the web pages on other computers, and text color for that matter. As for the color, I adjusted the contrast. But as for text size, I am confused; why are the text sizes are different?

Honestly I never considered the visitors text setting much, there' s too many other variables. I just tried to have a little flexibility built into the pages for expansion/contraction.

For creating web pages? I use a 10 pt font for most text. Headings and section titles may be larger.[;)] For viewing, see above. [8D]
