monstertrap -> Have you ever created a car dealership site? (6/12/2003 16:33:10)

I am talking with a potential client about doing a site for his car dealership. If I decide to take on the project it will be my biggest one yet. I must admit that I am a little (ok, a lot) nervous about creating a site of this size. I would like to know if you have created a site like this and if so, how did you handle the inventory (ie. car photos, etc.)? I am especially interested in how the visitors search or pull up the inventory. Did you create the inventory pages and database yourself or use a third party application? If you respond please give a link so I can see an example. Feel free to email or PM me....[:-]

Take a look at Auto Manager from Interactive Tools - iot will probably do exactly what you need and they provide an excellent service including free installation if you are not happy about installing scripts.

It also makes it very easy for the client to update the site.

We have found that most of the large car companies have very specific specs for their dealerships' web sites. Make sure that your client, or potential client, is aware of this and that you have a good look at those specs before you begin on the site. They can be very tricky and specific.

Best of luck.

I will be interested in seeing what comes out of this thread actually, as I am building a site for a car yard at the moment - albeit one that only sells second hand cars and is not aligned with any major manufacturer (although they sell mostly Mercedes Benz and Volvos).

With that in mind, the draft designs are similar in style/colours to Mercedes Benz' s web sites, as soon as I have one complete, I will post a link in here (some time in the next 10 days) and you can have a look. Am going to check out AutoManager myself as well.

Three hundred bucks for a database you still need to design a site around????

www.ecommercetempaltes.com

Look through the FrontPage templates for the GENERIC and add your own graphics. These templates are set up so you can " de-select" the shopping cart buttons and make it an on line catalog for car dealerships, real estate, etc.

In fairness to InteractiveTools it is really rather more than just a database and will allow much more flexibility around the requirements of a typical car dealerahip than a shopping cart will.

They provide superlative service, their scripts are easy to install and use and are very robust and I have to say I think that the price is very fair for what you get. $300 is certainly way less than the typical profit on the sale of a single car!

I have also used ecommercetemplates and think that the shopping cart setup is quite fantastic, the best value going too, but you are sort of comparing apples and oranges here, they are completely different things.

If you use any car manufacturer logos or graphics you should make sure you have permission from the manufacturer, or that the dealership does.

I meant no offense. You guys must be working with car dealerships with bigger budgets than mine. I do mostly used car dealership sites and the total budget for the project would be $600 to $750, not including hosting and domain registration. While the customers cannot search by price and options, the site does get what the customer wanted.

Like the others have said, be sure to fully understand what the client wants and needs and let them know EXACTLY what you are going to deliver.

AH - semantics! Having spent a few years in the Car biz and having a few as clients in my ad biz: A used car lot is not a dealership (to those in the business) - so, I assumed a dealership as in Franchised Dealer. My mistake.

For a inexpensive solution look at http://jonroig.com/freecode/openautoclassifieds/
