i operate a storefront for the business i work for, and having recently completed it, we are now looking to generate traffic and start making sales. i' ve been working on SEO for the site in my spare time, and we' ve gotten some pretty decent rankings through a pay for submission service. Now I want to know (as MGT comes down on me to generate a lot of traffic quickly)......are services like overture, google adwords, and looksmart worth it?

anyone care to share stories?

Hi,

Oveture gave me a little better results but don' t get me wrong AdWords pumped people in also.

I would say start out with several campaigns. Make them specific to your targeted keywords on a one on one basis. Make sure to use negative keywords, example -free. Also I start out with the lowest bid, see what that gets me slotted at and work the bid up as needed. I also would monitor twice a day (you may want to do more) and adjusted keywords and negative keywords accordingly. I also after a few days terminate the non performing campaigns. However learn from these failures and play with new results. Also clear your raw log files out at the time that you start the campaigns and track those results also. The two tracking systems will shed a lot of light on what to do next.

I made several sales on the first day which made me happy.

<edit>Keep in mind you only need to obtain slot one to three, you do not have to be #1 in this game. Most SEs that use this will show the first three slots.

that sounds like a good plan to me.....

i want to get this straight though....i HAVE to be in the top three on overture to get listed through that on msn and yahoo?

also, what is the importance of SEO in relation to this? i know these are automatic placements......would you suggest maxing out the SEO as well?

What do you mean by " negative" keywords? What is that supposed to mean?

I' m going to help a realtor with a Google Ad Words campaign...we' re going to purchase keywords like " Lake Wallenpaupack" and " Pocono Mountains" and the like.

For example, I have a client who operates a company providing very high end tours of Ireland in chauffeur driven vehicles, staying at the cream of Irish Hotels.

As well as the sort of keywords and phrases you might expect we would have for this sort of site, we have negative keywords like " cheap" " budget" and " bargain"

Thus if someone searches for " Bargain Irish Tours" or " Cheap Irish Vacation" - they won' t see the ad - they won' t want the service, so why pay for their clicks.

For it to be displayed on other SEs yes on Google no.

Keep in mind when you drop the campaigns the listings also will stop. I have used AdWords and Google to kick start sales. Then when I get enough " other" traffic I dropped the campaigns. Others don' t, they keep the campaigns rolling. It is really up to your marketing budget.

Katherine hit the nail on the head. Make sure to give a thorough read of how to structure your campaigns. You can also use exact matches on Google which will only show your ad when someone types in the exact keyword phrase. You also have two other choices of levels with matching you can choose from, I forget the terms too early here.

That is a great point about negative keywords! I have used both google adwords as well as overture with a bit of success. This is a great method to further qualify your hits!


" Quite simply, negative keywords are words that you don' t want your ad showing up for.

For " childrens books" good negative keywords may be:

-author name (if you don' t sell that author' s books)
-personalized (if you don' t sell personalized books)
-free (if you don' t give them away!) "
