Need help from PaintShop Pro User - 6/20/2003 8:36:04
I' m helping someone who uses Paintshop Pro. And though I downloaded a trail version of the software in order to help, I have no idea how to use PSP (who said learning Photoshop is difficult!?)

Here' s the problem:

We' re working with two layers. The first layer is the polaroid photo frame, with the center transparent.

The second layer is an individual photo image dropped onto the first and moved behind it. The photo image needs to be resized (scaled down) to fit in the frame.

In Photoshop, you resize and image by grabbing the handles (as shown in the illustration), holding down the shift key (to keep everything in proportion) and dragging the handles.

Neither of us can figure out how to do this in PSP. The person I' m helping can resize the photo but not by handlebars. We need something similar to handlebars because each picture can be more precisely and quickly resized.

Can this be done in PSP and, if so, how?

thanks, gail

I would use the Resize dialogue box (Image/ Resize...).

1. Make sure there is a check mark beside " Maintain aspect ratio " so you don' t distort your photo.
2. Make sure there is NOT a check mark beside " Resize all layers" so you change the size of the photo only, not the whole image.
3. Click on " Pixel Size" - at the top of the dialogue box.
4. Set the width or height in pixels to match the required work space
5. Click Okay

Cheers

Works, but I still don' t get the handlebars (which work MUCH faster since each pic must be resized individually). Is this at all possible in PSP?

Gail,
I don' t think so but if you are using PSP8 there are a lot of provided picture frames. If you can find one of them that will work for your project it might speed up your job. Size your picture using the method Paperfish suggested then go to Image/Picture Frame to add the frame which will automatically fit the picture either inside or outside your choice. You can also use the provided script to resize or do a new script (easy to do) with your size requirements and that can speed up resizing many different pictures if they are all to be the same size.

Hi Gail,

With most tools and functions, PSP remembers your last settings. You have to do the resize exercise the first time. After that, open the image, select Image/ Resize, and click Okay.

Yes, it does seem slower than just clicking on a handle but you will get the same width or height every time.

I suppose the resizing and cropping, though it will take a bit longer, will have to be done manually since simply reducing the image size may not suffice. As an example of what I' m talking about, the pix on this page are only portions of larger images:

I sized each image layer visually with the handles, then repositioned it with the Move Tool behind the thin white frame layer until it was " cropped" to my satisfaction. Using the same settings for each image would not have worked.

In any case, the information provided here will be helpful. Thank you again.
