how do I do jigsaw effect? - 6/20/2003 13:12:02
I am preparing to do a new site and the customer wants to use a jigsaw puzzle effect on some of his images. Not really do a puzzle, just have the cut-out lines on the image. I' ve searched all over the web and keep finding sw to create puzzles, but nothing that simply does the effect. I' m sure that some of the higher end s/w must do this, but I don' t know which and I really don' t want to spend $700 for image sw. I have Photodraw and Image Composer, but can' t find that either does this. Anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks......

I don' t know of any programs that does it automatically but I suppose you could use some of the Cutout Tools in Image Composer along with A little imagination and do it manually.

Maybe you can accomplish something similar with your programs.

Or you could play with the jigsaw shaped button in IC

This is how I did it - although it is a bit fiddley it works.

Make two buttons of the same height using the one each of the jigsaw shaped buttons in IC (Insert>Button - the jigsaw shapes are under " stackable" )

Ungroup them or flatten them to make them workable with. Make as many copies as you need.

Fiddle with as many of them as you need to to make additional " bumps" and " craters" (what on earth are they properly called?) by cutting pieces off some and stucking them on others. Make edge pieces by cropping them or filling them in as appropriate.

Position the image you want to be ' jigsawed' underneath.

Select the main image, and hold down the shift key to select also one of the jigsaw pieces. Open the Texture Transfer tool, select Transfer Shape and apply - a bit of the image is transfer to the jigsaw piece. repeat for all pieces.

Add a 1 pixel edge in a pale color (or a dark one on a pale image) to each jigsaw piece.

This how it came out:

Excellent work Katherine.

I already have absolutely no time and now everyone in this forum has turned me on to the things that can be done in IC. So now I will take time out of the time I don' t have to play with IC for several weeks. Damn this forum!!!

Thanks Abbeyvet:
I' m working with this, but I seem to be missing something. I get my buttons created, put the image underneath that I want jigsawed, select the main image and then a jigsaw piece and do the Texture Transfer (shape - apply) - I don' t see the image transfer to the puzzle piece. What I see is my original picture in the background, with 16 puzzle pieces layed over the top of it. I tried doing the texture-shape-transfer for all the pieces one at a time, and I also tried selecting them all at once and transferring but the result was the same both times. When I save and then view the " new" image, I see the original picture with the new puzzle pieces on top. I think I' m missing something in terms of making my puzzle pieces opaque?????

The critical thing is to select the main image FIRST, then the Jigsaw piece, then Transfer Shape - I would recommend doing the pieces one by one. I suspect you have been selecting the jigsaw piece first, then the main image.

The image you are transferring FROM should have little solid black squares around it when selected, the image you are transferring TO will have ouline squares.

You will need to add the border to the jigsaw pieces after you have trransferred the image - the image transfer will obliterate the border.

:) I must be holding my tongue wrong.

1. Open IC
2. Open the picture that I want " jigsawed"
3. Insert Buttons x2.
4. Move the buttons so they overlay the original picture
5. make sure nothing is " selected"
6. Click the original picture to " select" it.
7. Original pic gets white boxes with arrows to allow size changing.
8. Hold down " shift" key
9. Click one of the buttons (which are laying over the top of the original pic)
10. Boxes around original picture change to solid black boxes.
11. Boxes around jigsaw picture are outlines only.
12. Click Tools - Texture Transfer - Transfer shape
13. set Opacity bar to 56%, just to see what happens
14. Click " Apply"
15. Nothing changes. Apply button is still available but picture doesn' t change.
16. Click Save As and save under new name
17. Open the new jpg and it shows the original picture with two puzzle pieces laying over it, but not just the shape.

If I understand your earlier response, the image I want to view should come through onto the buttons when I Apply the texture transfer, is that right? I' ve never been able to get that to happen.

Sorry to be a pain, this sounds simple but I' m missing something somewhere.

My guess is you left out this step when preparing the jigsaw pieces:

quote:

Ungroup them or flatten them to make them workable with.

You cannot transfer texture to grouped images. When you create a button a group is created - the button and the text on the button. Flatten them or ungroup them and then try.

:) Abbeyvet, you are wonderful! You were right on about me missing the Flatten step. As soon as I did that things worked just as you described. Now I can start working on this with real pictures and setting up the pieces that I really want. THANK YOU so much!
Dennis
