Publishing to BTconnect.com server - 6/27/2003 12:12:57
Help somebody please.

Have put new (basic)website on btconnect ftp server. Had problems using FrontPage/publish - kept getting ' error 553: invalid filename' messages and crashes. Finally got all files to ftp server using Wachtelnet ftp utility. All files are on ftp server, but all the Theme information has vanished.

BTconnect help say it' s because the paths to the Theme information and .gifs is set to my C: drive, not the ftp location.

Site sort of exists (www.spartaconsulting.co.uk) but is slow to load, has no Theme information and BTconnect say it' s cause FrontPage is an oddity. All pages are simple HTM with a standard feedback form only - no .asp or anything fancy.

Btconnect help says basically ' not our problem chief!'

Anybody with the time take a look and tell me where solution might lie, and also are there any specific questions about BTconnect ftp server software configuration (like extensions etc) that need to be present to make my nice new site work. (their ' how to guide' actually quotes FrontPage publish procedures and says how easy it is!!!)

Thanks in advance

Marc Atherton

p.s this is urgent as Customs people want to see the site as proof of business area of operations else maybe a big fine!!.

Do you mean you used FTP to put your site on thier web server? A FTP server would not allow anyone to see the site.

FP themes only work when PUBLISHED by the FP publish protocol.

Sounds like time to get another host!!!!!

FP extension have nothing to do with FTP servers - they run on a WEB server (http)

It is rather simple

The chances are that BT connect do not provide FrontPage extensions.

That is borne out by the fact that you cannot publish.

Most ISP free space - and I am assuming that this is ISP free space - in the UK and Ireland do not support extensions, and to be honest they generally have very poor support for their hosting customers anyway. HAving said that they are kind of right - it is not really their problem because if you read their terms you will find that they say they don' t offer FP extensions, and since the problems are arising because you are using FP extensions dependant items in your web, they are completely off the hook.

Which is all very well, but what are you to do?

You ahve 2 options:

1. Redesign the site using NOTHING that requires extension - this will rule out themes, FP forms and some other stuff. Keep it very simple and you should be fine.

The best approach to this sort of design is to make one page look as you want it to look - no theme, start from scratch. The simply open that page and do File>Save as to make your additional pages.

2. Get a host that provides extensions
Then you should be good to go with the site you have.

Looking at your code you seem also to have pasted in stuff from Word, or another Office program. Don' t do this, it makes and appaling mess, copy content first from Word in to Notepad, then in FP - then format it in FP. It will work out way better.

Again I have to defend BT Connect - not that I have any particular interest to do so, but if they do not offer extensions on free accounts they cannot be blamed or be counted as idiots if features that require extensions do not work.

I just took a look at BT COnnect' s site. Here is what they say:

quote:

Please note:
The Internet Business Pack (IBP) and Web Publisher must be present on the account in order for you to publish using FrontPage extensions (http).

To publish using FrontPage Extensions enter the following address:

In other words to use extensions you must upgrade your account, and you publish to some sort of a shared area, which is odd but probably fine.

The Internet Business Pack cost £10 per month and includes some other stuff like additional ISP accounts. So there is the possibility of staying where you are.

Having said all that in defence of BT, I also have to say that I have found that large telecomms companies, whose primary business is telephony and ISP type services. rarely provide a decent hosting service and even more rarely decent support for their hosting.

In the long run I would say move, in the short term, if this is a real emergency, talk to BT and upgrade your account.

well, I went to your site and everything is broken. Since it is an emergency I would suggest using includes (SSI), or text for navigation instead of FP navbars. You can use FTP to transfer your files, just make sure to transfer everthing. You' ll probably need to use a different Form Handler and that may be provided by the host.

BTW - do you know why the FP FTP function didn' t work?
