How to avoid getting sunburnt - 4/5/2000 13:31:00
Making money while not designing
=====================

Summer's just around the corner and if where you live is anything like Spain, you'll find that orders for site design dry up as people head-off to the beach for three months. I reckon now's a good time to think about regular monthly incomes and how to keep the wolf from the door when the orders aren't coming in.

These are my five tips for supplementing and increasing income from web design and avoiding sunburn.

1. Try to get a monthly payment from the client for web site maintenance and updates - push the idea of a what's new section.

2. Sign-up as a reseller or partner with your hosting company. There are some pretty good offers to be had, which should make it possible to add a few pesetas to your monthly hosting charges.

3. Offer more than just web design. There's some great e-commerce software about - distribute the software from your site and you should get about 20% discount on the sale. There's also the strong possibility you'll be able to design the shop as well for extra income. Other possibilities might be web site translations, interactive catalogues or even print work.

4. Give internet tuition - so many subjects to choose from.

5. Advertising agencies are a great source of work - they also take ages getting round to things so some simple work started now often takes three months before they are ready for it. They're also less busy in the Summer so are likely to come up with the work that they've been promising since last Summer.

Cheers,
Andy

I have not experienced a trend in the summers for business to drop off...at least not in my past positions. Some may think this a good thing? These are all helpful suggestions. Thank you for sharing them.

Hi Marr,

I think Spain may be a bit *special*. Everything closes in August - bars, shops, offices, the lot - July and to a lesser extent September are quiet.

Cheers
Andy

Wow...sounds like a pretty laid back place to live...if you can afford it!
But...what do you do if all of the shops close up and bars(eek!) etc?
Does everyone just leave and find a new home for the summer?

I can assure you that not all the bars in Spain close during the summer. Life is much more quiet but not as dead as Andy's message seems to imply.
Saludos from the USA while missing all those bars...

Hi Jorge,

I was exaggerating somewhat and also referring to towns away from the tourist areas - Spain is certainly not "dead" in the Summer - it's just difficult to to continue normal business life for a while.

Please accept my apologies.

Cheers
Andy

Oops, I feel bad Andy. I didn't mind to correct you, but not to give the rest the wrong idea about our country. I lived in Barcelona during a year and I can confirm that it looks almost death during the summer. Great time to visit it!!! Same thing about Madrid. Imaging those big cities without traffic jams...
Accept my apologies too.
Gracies.
