View Source in browser does not work - 6/27/2003 18:19:53
Help. My view source doesn' t work anymore. When I right click on a web page and hit view source, the code used to come up in notepad. Now nothing happens. Anybody have any ideas as to what happened? Or anything I can check.

I don' t believe I did anything to the settings but I can' t find any info on it anywhere.

thanks in advance.

For those who read this thread subsequently:

If you are using internet explorer Version 6 either with or without the service packs it is essential that you regularly clear out your temporary internet files folder and your TEMP folder. There is a bug (separate from the so called " peek a boo" bug) that can either make it impossible to see the source code or on occasions see images - specifically .jpg images.

Fixing it can be tricky to put it mildly so it is in your own interests to start doing housekeeping very regularly. Once a week is not too much.

I hope this information helps some of you avoid problems.

Karsten

If your cache (Temp internet files) exceeds the limit you set for it, you may also experience problems saving JPEG's from web pages. As far as I can remember it tries to save the image a bitmap.

Hi,

I have the same problem: 'view source' does not work at all. Nothing happens.

What do you mean by 'Clear your Cache' ? I went to Tools --> Internet Options and pressed Delete Files in the Temporary Internet Files section. Also, I have 100 MB dedicated to this option (under Settings).

Please help, and thanks in advance,

BFM

With the browser shut down, right click on the desktop icon and choose properties > delete files
Now restart the browser.

Thanks! It did not work though.

I finally found the cause of this problem: I had a shortcut named 'Notepad' on my desktop. Duh!

Solution:

If there is a file (or shortcut) on the desktop that is named Notepad, rename it to something else. If you're not using the shortcut, simply delete it.

Errr....ok. Whatever works :)
Does it matter what you rename it? :)

I don't know. I renamed it to a shortcut named 'Notepad2' and it works.

I guess IE gets confused when it finds 'Notepad' on the Desktop...

the simplest and most reliable way to keep your cache clean in IE is Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Security and select the option "delete temp files when browser is closed" be sure to select APPLY before you select OK. With this setting, the temp files are auto deleted after every session.

Nope just as long as the shortcut ain't called notepad.

I'm adding this so search engines will find it. The existing msgs don't quite make it.
View Source in Internet Explorer fails (for sure) if you add a shortcut to notepad to your desktop. I thought it was a good idea, but side effect is a disaster for a developer like me.
I deleted the shortcut and instantly, my view source was working again!!
One msg in this thread said it worked to just rename the shortcut to something other than notepad.
If you create a "notepad" shortcut on the desktop, clicking on View Source will do nothing. Nada.

That's not true in every case. I have notepad shortcuts on the desk tops of my home and work computers and they have no such effect.
So I think there must be something else that acts with the shortcut to cause your problem.

IMHO it's misleading to generalise like this.

I had the same issue. It started when I installed FrontPage. There is a registry value now missing. To fix it do this:

1) Open notepad.

2) paste the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]
@="Notepad.exe"

3) save as fix.reg (you will have to select view all files or it will append .txt to the end)

4) find where you saved the file and double click on it.

5) when asked if you want to merge the file into the registry, click yes.

Wallah, problem fixed!
