Problems with the Tools/Server menu - 6/29/2003 19:42:22
Okay, I have been trying to do password on my webpages, but i cant figure out how. When i try going into Tools and the Server, Server is a menu that will not let me into it. It is grey and very annoying, Does anyone know how to fix that, please only reply if you do know how, because i have this set to Notify me via e-mail when someone replies. Please help me, and, if you will you can tell me how to by e-mail, my e-mail adress is Ender_AC@hotmail.com Thank you!.

You have to open your site live on the server in order for the security settings to be available.

Did you try, " File" , " Open Web" , then type in " http://www.mydomain.com" in the web name field at the bottom of the window?

If you haven' t, try that. This should open your site " live" on the server. From there, you should be able to select " Tools," " Server" and " Permissions."

MB,

I' m following this thread trying to learn something for future reference. The above steps do get me into my site and, you' re right, the " Tools," " Server" and " Permissions" menus are activated. It seems, however, the " Permissions" command applies to a global site password rather than a selected page. Right? Wrong? If I' m wrong, how do you use this process to select a password or " Permission" for visitors to enter a specified page which, I think, prompted the original question?

Thanks!

I just tried that, thanks but, it says " The folder " http://multisite.netfirms.com/" is not accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the filename contains a / or \.

Ahh damn, Thanks, please reply, i will be trying to fix it till then, bye

Larry-you are correct - let me correct myself.......It' s been a while since I' ve used this feature. You' ll need to have a subweb created on the live site. Open the subweb (i.e. http://www.mydomain.com/myrestrictedarea/), and once that' s open, select " Tools" and " Server" " Permissions." This will only change the permissions in that subweb/directory.

Sorry about that.

If I may jump in here, I am having a similar problem. After opening the subweb live, then Permissions, I get an error that I do not have permission for this operation. I am supposed to have the web admin (I thought that was me!) change my permissions or log in with a different account. To my knowledge we only have 1 account and password. In the administrative area I have the same issue. I can' t create a new user or manage users because the login/password aren' t accepted. So far the only thing I' ve tried succesfully is creating a subweb from the admin screen.

Do I have something set wrong in FP or is this an issue with my host? It isn' t a free account but I' m not sure how much access we' re allowed. We' re using FP2002 extensions if that helps.

Speaking of extensions, there was a warning somewhere about using FTP to upload FP files as it would corrupt (I think) the extensions. I' m afraid this may have happened since we switched to FP recently and the first time or two stuck with FTP.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are on a WIN server?

Could be - reinstall (or have your host if needed) the extensions, just to be safe...

um, I' m showing how little I know here. Which is an teeny tiny bit. By Win you mean windows as opposed to Unix?

I' m off to play around with the extensions.

Yep - Windows servers are so insecure host do not allow users to set premissions.

Are you on WIN or *nix?

If you are a WIN server, you' ll need to get the server admin to set premissions for you. If you on a *nix server you can do it by connecting live.

If you are on a Windows server, forget FrontPage' s security and go with Spooky' s login :)

MB & Gil,

Your input just caused the light bulb to go on! Calling-up a subweb on the live site then electing select " Tools" and " Server" " Permissions" does allow not only the addition of a new user but it also permits selection of a new users role from " Administrator" (no way) descending in responsibility to " Advanced Author" , to " Author" , to " Browser Only" .

I see this as the answer to allowing input/maintenance from several different departments, each with their own user name/password/user authority without compromising the integrity of the main company site ... ah, at least on Unix. In fact, Administrator access to one of my sites using " Tools" and " Server" " Permissions" let me look so deep I was at the Engineer level (example: recalculate FP extensions) - I cancelled out right away!

In closing, I think beamz problems are host related, possibly because of FTP versus publishing via FrontPage.

I really don' t think we got off the original thread here - just expanded on it. Thanks so much!

Another reason this can happen is that when or if you update the password or username you use to access some hosting control panels, the FrontPage username and/or password are not properly updated.

They can be updated manually if this happens, but you need root access to the server to do it by either Telnet or SSH.

hmm I am on a windows server. " windows basic" is my plan and it seems all the issues with passwords and managing users is ' cuz of this.

So my options are to either upgrade to unix or use Spooky Login? Spooky Login seems like an easier quick fix. If I can' t find any other benefits to chaning to unix (I' m sure there are but we' re a small site!) I' ll use it.

Also, EW, I' d go with spooky login just to make life easier. Hell, I may use it only to make MY life easier.

Thanks for the help guys.

Make sure your host supports ASP, or the Spooky Login won' t be of any use to you...

Most free web hosts do not support server side scripting.

Some of the content in this topic may not be applicable to some languages.

Note Only the UNIX operating system allows registration through a Web browser.

To protect and monitor your web site, you must first create a registration form and then set up how you want to protect and monitor your site.

Create a user registration form. How?

Set how you want to protect your web site. How?

Next, add the users to the web, adding users for browse, author, and administer access separately. How?

Note Microsoft Windows 2000 security and Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) do not allow registration through a Web browser.

It was nice of MS to offer the possibility through FP but it doesn' t work on their software. LOL:):):):)

:)Well you can use the volume control on the speakers themselves if available or you can use :)
I' m sorry but I couldn' t resist!:):):):)

As for the registration form offered by FP unless you are hosted on Unix according to MS you can' t use it. I didn' t stick around your site too long as the music was also too loud for my old ears:) but you might be able to set up an area that requires users to log in for access. You can check out the Spooky login or this login script from another source and see if they can fit into your scheme.
