Thomas Brunt -> Google Adsense (6/30/2003 13:58:35)

Anybody here tried it yet? Anybody want to?

" Google AdSense is for web publishers who want to make more revenue from advertising on their site while maintaining editorial quality. AdSense delivers text-based Google AdWords ads that are relevant to what your readers see on your pages — and Google pays you."

It sounds okay but there are a couple of competitors for one of my sites that I DO NOT want mentioned on my site and they periodically buy adwords. I guess I should read the whole thing maybe you can exclude some.

Andy from Spain -> RE: Google Adsense (7/4/2003 6:39:41)

Hi

I can see a couple of problems - I can' t find anywhere where it says how much can be earned through the program. Also it seems that you can' t exclude ads so you may well find yourself advertising competitors. If it was possible to say I want to display ads for " Blue Widgets" only then it would be a great idea if I was selling only red ones. Having said that I might give it a whirl on one site and let you know how it goes.

Cheers
Andy

toniallen -> RE: Google Adsense (7/4/2003 12:43:41)

Haven' t tried it, myself.

But, have only heard really good things from webmasters using Adsense, so far.

Take care,
Toni

hzarabet -> RE: Google Adsense (7/9/2003 15:38:36)

I am using it now for about 5 days:

1. Yes you CAN filter out competitors
2. The ads are very subtle text-based look
3. The earnings are not based on a per click number. It seems that different ads generate different amounts.

All in all, I am pleased. They are having a bug problem with the competitor filter at the moment. I would recommend trying it to see if it is for you.

torben -> RE: Google Adsense (7/9/2003 17:35:36)

Hi
Thanks for the tip. Did not know it existed. Signed up at once. Works well for me, better than anything else I have tried so far.
Different clicks give different amounts. That is the system in " adwords" The advertiser state how much he will pay for a " click through" The higher the offer, the better he is placed in the google search ranking (the small adds in the right side)
However it depends a lot of the type of your site. I am in the " content" group. Tourist information. So far it has been fustrating starving. Now it looks like a gold mine with a click through rate of 4 %
Best regards Torben

Wes -> RE: Google Adsense (7/13/2003 10:20:44)

I was shocked when on my own site searching my own site internally for a book using google that Amazon and Amazon results were displayed on my site as results also. I wrote to google twice expressing my wonderment that once someone is on my site it seemed pretty bad to give a competitor an ad link on my site and both times they promised an answer, none ever came.

vtmnldy -> RE: Google Adsense (7/14/2003 12:01:12)

I found this interesting when first I came across it, and signed up after they said I could screen out competitors.
program was flawed, because I was startled to discover, when I tested the script, that I received ONLY competitors, other sites selling, as I do, supplements.
My first take on the program was that they would be sending complementary advertising - books, crystals, etc. Nope![:' (]
I was even more startled to discover that when these competing ads were clicked on, they did not open within my site, but took my customers quite away from it. I compare it to meeting your customer at the door, escorting him out, pointing down the street and saying :you can get what you intended to buy from me over there"
No amount of advertising revenue could compensate for this kind of loss of business, imhop, nor recompense the customer for the annoyance they would experience trying to find me again, when they discovered they didn' t want the alternative after all!
Perhaps if they rethink this a bit, I will be interested.

vtmnldy -> RE: Google Adsense (7/14/2003 12:02:58)

Oops - part of a sentence missing. Insert " Obviously my understanding of the" in front of " program " , above.
Sorry!

cooper -> RE: Google Adsense (7/14/2003 20:42:01)

I' ve been on it for a week and have $22.76 in my account. I have looked at my site regularly and anything that sounds like competition, I click. Once I get the URL, I add it to my competitors list and it has yet to show up again.

It' s interesting, but I am keeping an eye on it.

cooper -> RE: Google Adsense (7/28/2003 16:06:41)

Just a quick update...

Competition filter is working, however I have to keep an eye on it. Some folks have their site listed as " http://www" and then the same site as just " http://" .

Other than that, I start on 7/10/2003 and as of 7/28/2003, I have earned $66.76 on 1,444 views and 90 clicks.

Splitrimz -> RE: Google Adsense (8/3/2003 11:48:03)

Tried it; after twenty entries in my exclude folder there were competition ads still being posted. I think I may be in too competitive a market for it to work for me.

Thomas Brunt -> RE: Google Adsense (8/5/2003 10:53:40)

Same here. Wish there was a way to exclude ads using certan words.

Shirley -> RE: Google Adsense (8/11/2003 17:04:41)

I added it to a site that gets a fair amount of traffic but not tons of traffic. (It has 350 people signed up for the newsletter)

So far I have made 3 cents[sm=rolleyes.gif]

Mojo -> RE: Google Adsense (8/22/2003 12:27:13)

I placed adsense on a site that I basically had abandoned. It has fallen in the search engine results page to page 3 on Google, but it is still record #2 on MSN.

That said, it gets around 40 visitors per day. I started adsense 2 days ago and have $25 in my account (I have not even clicked the ads - per the Google agreement). I love it!

Already, it has paid for hosting. Anything more is fun money. Next up - Get it back in the top 5 on Google.

If you don't worry about competitive ads, it seems like a pretty good program to me.

BigBlue -> RE: Google Adsense (8/27/2003 12:52:36)

I had signed up for AdSense about 1-1/2 months ago, was accepted, then never did anything with it.

Then I happened to read an article titled Google ads now self-serve on news.com. This is the section that caught my eye:

quote:

ORIGINAL: Google ads now self-serve

Google would not disclose how many sites had signed up for its new service, but said demand was strong. The company also declined to disclose revenue figures, either for individual sites or for the program as a whole.

But Hoskins, who uses the service to serve relevant ads to an array of online publications devoted to specific wireless-computing technologies, gave an idea of how much participants could expect to earn.

In July, Hoskins said, his AdWords generated approximately 160 to 220 click-throughs per day--or between 2.6 percent and 4.1 percent of those who saw the ads. In return, AdSense generated $2,359 in revenue for the month.
Hoskins admitted that it wasn't riches, but he said he wasn't complaining.
It's true that they don't publish the rates. My understanding of the program is that it's the publishers side of the AdWords advertiser program. With AdWords, sites "bid" for specific keywords. Highest bids get top placement. Lower bids may not get placement at all. Google shares the revenue, which varies per click depending on what the advertiser bid for the keywords.

Theoretically, the "hot" keywords would garner higher bids from advertisers, and therefore your per-click revenue would be higher. This is apparent when looking at the reports. Some days I have more impressions and clicks, but less revenue (and vice versa).

In any case, if you can avoid advertising your competitors (which can be tricky if they are crafty with their domain names), its definitely worth checking out. The key seems to be getting a good clickthrough rate, which may take some tweaking.

I starting using them on my forums using the 468x60 banner size, but when I switched to the 728x90 leaderboard format, clickthrough rates went up 3-4x. We're not supposed to disclose our earnings or specifics, but let's just say I'm very happy. [:D]

suzkaw -> RE: Google Adsense (8/27/2003 14:54:53)

Last month I had just 14.2 / average clicks a day and made . Still haven't been paid yet but it is the most I have made off of an affiliate program yet.

cooper -> RE: Google Adsense (8/27/2003 21:46:48)

I have the adwords HTML on three sites (one gets good traffic, one gets OK traffic and one gets next to now traffic). I am getting at check at the end of the month for $275 (two months worth of clicks). Heck... I'll take it.

abbeyvet -> RE: Google Adsense (8/28/2003 9:21:05)

Wow!

I set this up on a site last night at about 8pm after reading this thread. Got approval within a couple of hours, which was much faster than I expected, and checked a report just now. It is less than 24 hours on the site and has earned more than ads from Commision Junction did in a month! Amazing.

abbeyvet -> RE: Google Adsense (9/2/2003 15:51:12)

Just to follow up with some initial impressions after a week of adsense - a ridiculously short time I know, but it has been very interesting.

First of all earnings have been very good. Very. Much more than I expected.

(On that note I suggest that those who have posted figures for their earnings here would remove them, it is in contravention of the terms to reveal your earnings.)

I was unsure at the start as to what to do about blocking ads from competitors. So, I took a fairly lenient approach, I only blocked about a half dozen sites that had directly comparable services (online courses in a niche area). That left very many who are offering very similar and in some cases overlapping services.

What effect has this had on the site's business? None that I can see. Sales were good, up a nice bit, this week, though of course a week is not long enough to detect a trend, maybe they will nose dive next week. [:(]

Page views per visit have remained consistent. Nothing much in fact seems to have changed in that regard.

My gut feeling about all this is as follows.

People who come to the site and therefore click on the ads fall, broadly, into 2 categories. (there are others, but these will be the 2 main ones.)

1. Those who already know the site quite well and are familiar with what it has to offer

Chances are these people have already checked out many of your competitors. If they are interested in your subject they are bound to have. So it is not that big a deal if they click off to them again. They'll be back, unless your site and your offering is not up to par in which case it is the site/service you need to work on, not excluding more people from adsense to prevent your users finding out about them.

2. Those who have followed a link from somewhere else to your site.

They are potential new customers/users and you do not want to lose them. But by definition they are browsing in your topic area and therefore are prime candidates for clicking ads and going away again.

Problem? No, I don't think so.

Even if you are doing great on click throughs, they are unlikely to ever get near double figures. So 90+% of people do not click away on an ad. But 100% eventually leave your site. That is just a 10% difference.

If your site actually delivers what a person who arrives at it wants, they will stay. If it is not what they wanted, they will leave. What's new about that? That is what they always did anyway!

Only now, you might earn a little from them as they go. That has to be good!

I don't have any idea how adsense will pan out in the long term, but as a way of creating income for sites rich in content it is by far the best hope there has ever been of actually earning something worthwhile.

_gail -> RE: Google Adsense (9/29/2003 20:19:40)

Forgive my ignorance but this is the first time I've ever been involved in affiliate programs, and I've just been accepted for AdSense (signed up and was accepted in about an hour). I'm trying to get a handle on some of the terms and can't seem to find the answer at the Google site.

AdSense terms say the following:

quote:

we do not permit AdWords ads to be published on web pages that also contain what could be considered competing ads. This would include all content-targeted ads as well as text-based ads. Text-based ads, for this situation, can be loosely defined as ads that mimic AdWords ads or appear to be associated with AdWords ads on your site. We do allow affiliate or limited-text links.

Questions:

What are "all content-targeted ads?"

Also, what is the difference between "text-based ads," which are not allowed, and "limited-text links" from other affiliates, which are allowed.

thanks, gail

suzkaw -> RE: Google Adsense (9/29/2003 20:28:13)

The way I read it is to not have ads that look like adwords. All the rest should be ok.

_gail -> RE: Google Adsense (9/29/2003 21:15:08)

Thank you.

More questions:

Does anyone place google ads in includes, or do you drop in the code page by page?

If you use includes, does that cause any problems for the ads picking up keywords on a particlar page and displaying ads that fit in with the content?

gail

BigBlue -> RE: Google Adsense (9/29/2003 22:41:46)

You can use them in includes with no problem at all. I do that on my site. You might have a problem if you used an IFRAME, but I've heard some people report that even THAT works ok (but I'll believe it when I see it).

_gail -> RE: Google Adsense (10/1/2003 20:29:59)

Here's the reply from Google folk:

quote:

To be more specific, we do not permit AdWords ads to be published on web pages that also contain what could be considered competing ads. This would include all content-targeted ads (that display ads automatically based on the content of the page) as well as text-based ads that either directly mimic or attempt to be associated with AdWords ads. We do allow some affiliate or limited-text links, such as your "top selling" links. These are fine.

btw, they are VERY good at getting back to you with answers to your questions.
