Favicon - 6/18/2000 20:20:00
When you add a site to favourite in I.E. have you ever noticed that as if by magic an icon appears to the left of the http:// It also appears in the favourites list next to the name of the site/page. Do you want one too? Make you site stand out in the favourites list. Well this is what to do. Find/get/download a prog that can save an image as an icon – that is with the file extension .ico An example of on of these progs is Happy Icon – does the job ok. You can download it from http://www.tucows.com/ Make an icon image or convert an existing image to a file called favicon.ico Upload this image to the main folder on your web site – the one that holds the main pages. That’s pretty much it. To test: Load you page in I.E. 5 or above select add to favourites Re load your page from favourites As if by magic it appears By the way, if you’re using Win98 or active desktop, you can drag the icon from the address bar to the quick launch tool bar at the bottom of your screen. It then becomes a shortcut to the web page/site. Hours of fun – I think you’ll agree! Also, this only works for I.E. 5 and above – but it’s still fun. To encourage people to experience your wonderful icon, why not add the following code to your pages: CLICK HERE TO ADD TO FAVOURITES! Have a look at mine if you like www.the4bears.com and www.the-elvis-experience.freeserve.co.uk Just to give more of an idea about what I’m talking about. Have fun, Paul PS there is quite a lot written about favicon on the web
