WAP IT! - 6/21/2000 20:23:00
Just made my first entry into WAP. It’s fun trying something new isn’t it.I just got a Nokia phone, so I went to the Nokia web site at http://www.nokia.com and downloaded the Nokia WAP toolkit. It’s a pretty good learning tool and comes with some example pages (cards). Also it comes with a variety of phone simulators so you can see how it looks in the phone before you publish. I got a WAP browser to use on my computer from http://www.tucows .com - WinWap Light. http://www.aspfree has just started a section on WAP – which is quite good for links and tips. I signed up with http://www.cblue.com - a free WAP hosting service, which gives loads of web space. - more than you would ever need I think. I also signed up with http://www.waponomy.com - which is also free and also gives lots of space. Both services are quick and easy to sign up for. They offer the ability to make the content online, but I preferred making it on my comp and uploading it. I also went to the http://www.macromedia.com site and downloaded a plug-in for Fireworks – so that I can convert pictures into .WBMP format – which is one used for WAP. It is also possible to download progs from http://www.tucows.com (but I didn’t try that) That’s about all I can think of for now, but I’ll keep you posted if I find out any more. It’s no wonder I don’t want to go to bed with all this good stuff going on. Give it a try –it’s not as difficult as you may think (WAP, I mean. Going to bed is difficult!) Paul

Paul - thanks for posting this info over here. Accessing information from cell phones and palm pilots doesn't seem so new except from the design standpoint. quote: Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) provides a universal open standard for bringing Internet content and advanced Value Added Services to mobile phones and other wireless devices.
Does this include Palm Pilots? I thought it would, but didn't see anything specific under the WAP stuff. http://www.palmos.com/dev/tech/webclipping/ - Is this completely separate from WAP concerning cell phones? - Linda

Can I ask a dumb question about WAP? Do I have to create an entirely separate website using WAP to deliver info to cell phones, or is it something I need to adjust my existing site to do?

Hi,You'd have to make a completely new start - using WML instead of HTML - I imagine the screen resolution might be a bit smaller too. Try following Paul's instructions above - if you've got the time it is quite interesting. Cheers Andy ------------------ Internet Business Solutions S.L. (Spain)

There are programs out there which can convert your HTML site to one readable by WAP devices (I think they put some kind of marker/tag around the bits you want read by the WAP server). But the reality is that the text you would put on a web site is possibly more verbose than you would put on a WAP site, given the (current)low (~9800bps) bandwidth and the small/low quality screens on even the most advanced WAP phones of the moment. The beauty of the limiting screens/bandwidths at the moment is that it makes designing a site pretty easy and there are so many good free authoring packages out there! With the advancement of broadband for mobile phones (only about 6-12 months away, depends where you are - I'm in the UK) and the development of phone screen technology, this will, of course all change....
