andyf -> PWS Download Problem (7/8/2003 23:20:02)

Hello:

I have a standalone W98 OS where I hope to learn ASP. I need PWS to act as my testing host. I don' t have a W98 cd.

I went to the MS NT4.0 Option Pack download site and selected W95 for the system(for W98), selected english for the language, then that brought me to the list of files to download.

I selected " install.exe" . The download wizard starts up and is active 10 secs.
There is no progress showing on the gauge. After 10 secs, IE pops up a dialogue saying the site is not available.

As MS moved this site to another location and the URL doesn' t reflect this?
Can I obtain PWS from anywhere else to download?

I' ve tried all hours of the day using browser ie5 and Netscape 4 with the same results.

Thanks for the help.

Can you borrow someone' s W98 cd for an hour or so?

Or do you have access to any of the NT4 sp4+ cd' s, they all have the NT Option Pack included.

Or you could just get an upgrade to XP Pro, use IIS5.1, and be a lot happier in the long run. PWS on 98 is an IIS4 look-alike, which means you won' t have server.execute, server.transfer, and some other goodies that are currently available from most of the windows-based web hosts. In addition, if you do any serious database-asp development you better put the resource meter on your taskbar and be ready to reboot a couple times a day as your resources dwindle.

I've been having problems too. I was on the net searching but was unsuccessful.

During the setup, there is Sysocmgr problem of an "illegal operation and will be shut down" and freezes. I've installed "Mtssetup.dll" from the www.microsoft.com, which replaces the previous one, but still the same thing happens.

I'll be glad when I can use pws to get on with writing my website!!! Seems like I'm far from there.

I open the program and press "start" this is what I get:

"There was an unexpected erro using the Metabase
Error = 3"

when you get to this page... http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/NT4OptPk/ntsx86dl.asp you must right click each file and choose "Save As"

[:-]for some odd reason M$ has made this be the most arcane of program installations
(download the files manually and then install)...
[;)]you could also try to download them backwards, but you would still have to download install.exe

[8|]or you just save install exe till the very last file and then you would still have to download

That's what I did. I then found out that Visual Basic has PWS as well. But the same problem occured.

Microsoft had an file to be replaced (dll file). I tried that and still the same problem as I mentioned before.

Dan, PWS = Personal Web Server, comes with Windows 98, later changed to IIS in XP. This might be a bit off topic, as you seem intent on going MS, but have you tried another PWS? I use Abyss and that has ASP support, just a thought.

Mark

I'm having difficulties making PWS work. I have WIN98SE. It was working for a while but now it says:

Problem:
An unexpected error occured.

Solution:
Please restart the Publishing Wizard.
