SE use of private account information - 7/9/2003 11:51:52
Hello All............. Ive been investigating the use of " KeyWord Ranking" at: www.directresponse.com a site that offers specific ROI data on keywords you have listed at Pay Per Click engines like Google, Overture, etc. In response to my question to Direct Response " How do you get the actual cost that I pay for a particular word?" I got this answer: ******************************************* " we get the cost data directly from your account with the ppc engine. the cost data will be the total spent on a word per day. we then do a calculation to report the cpc - which will be the average daily cpc. We have data exchange relationships with the top ppc engines which provides us with limited access to your account with Overture for example. This limited access allows us to pull your spending data." ********************************************* Now I' m just an amateur at this but I was shocked! They make it sound like it' s no big deal........ and maybe it isn' t..........but the SE' s sharing my private account data (ANY of it) with someone sounds very unethical to me. If they share any information who is to say they don' t share all of it? And to whom for what?? I would very much like to hear some feedback on this issue. Is it just that I don' t understand the " issue" ?? Thanks!

I' m not a fan of any sharing of information unless I approve it. However have you ever done a who is lookup on your domain name? It' s all there. Brian

Hi............... I wasn' t referring to the domains' " public info" . In the case of search words, I' m talking about a SE making an arrangement with an outside firm, to give them access to your account so they can see (1) what search words you have purchased from that SE, (2) what you are paying for each word. And, this is all in real time. Now you have a 3rd party (the outside firm) with access to your account.....I could come up with a number of ways they might make $$ with that info, with competitors for example. And this may be very farfetched, but now that they have (some kind of) access to your account is there a possibility of making changes to it? The whole thing just sounds very unethical to me.
