Can’t Open .tif File - 7/13/2003 0:10:37
A client has sent me some .tif files that he would like put on his website as .jpg’s. I haven’t been able to open the files. I’ve tried to open the file in Image Composer, Adobe Illustrator and the image tools that come with Windows XP. It also won’t “preview” in Windows XP.

Before I call the client and sound real dumb, could I get some ideas what is wrong and maybe how to open them?

I’ve uploaded one of the .tif’s to http://www.rogert.us/Bartlett-2.tif if someone would like to look at it.

Thanks.

" page not found" when i go to your site

If you only tried it in one program and it wouldn' t open i' d say your file associations weren' t set to open Tiffs. But if you' ve tried it in three programs?
What kind of an error message do you get?

Dave

I don' t think it is a problem with the file associations. The message from Image Composer says:

Image file " C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\My Documents\My Webs\RogerT\Bartlett-2.tif" is stored in an unsupported format or format variant.

Could this file be a Mac file instead of a file for a PC?

Thanks

It' s possible that the file was made for a mac.
Ive had this problem before...but can' t remember the solution :)
Here' s two things I would try:

1. Try renaming the file to .tiff instead of .tif and see if it opens.

2. download irfanview : www.irfanview.com . Very small program that opens just about any media format. Open the file in irfanview, then save it as something you can open, like a jpg.

Hope that helps,
Toni

I changed the file extension to .tiff and tried opening it in InfranView. InfranView says " Can' t read file header! Unknown file format!

Go figure...

sounds to me like the file is corrupt, was a mac file or was renamed and now it won' t open.

I' ve tried 8 different ways from Sunday and I can' t get it to open on a Win XP machine. PSP, PS, IC or any other editor I may have. It tried to open in QuickTime the first time:).

Roger, any luck with this file yet? I know it' s been a couple of days but I have a Mac and just might be able to help you out. It seems the file you linked to is no longer there so I can' t grab it right now. Let me know if I can still be of some assistance.

well, scratch my previous post....I found your " Why can' t I open this?" link on your home page and downloaded the file. It won' t open in anything on my Mac either. Photoshop on both platforms tells me that it isn' t a .tif file to begin with, which leads me to believe it simply became corrupted in transit from your client to you. How were these files sent? CD, email, FTP? We often find here at work when dealing with design firms, commercial printers, graphic artitst, etc that unless files are first compressed in some way (.zip or .rar on a PC - .sit or .sea on a Mac) they often become corrupt when emailed or sent via FTP.

Have your client resend them by placing all images in a folder and compressing that folder. If they were supplied on a CD then perhaps they had a burn problem. By the way, a .tif created on a Mac should open just fine on a PC (as should a .doc, .xls or anything else created on cross platform compatible applications). A CD burned on a Mac, however, most likely won' t even be readable on a PC so you couldn' t even tell if there were files on the darn thing - good, bad or otherwise!

One other thing...if you often get images from Mac users and they compress them with Stuffit (the Mac equivalent of WinZip) do yourself a favor and download the free Stuffit Expander from Alladin Systems (http://www.alladinsys.com) so that you can open those .sit, .sea or .hqx files generated on a Mac.

Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it. I won' t look so dumb when I call the client.

The files came to me on an Iomega 100 zip disk. I' ll ask the client if he would have the person that took the pictures contact me.

Thanks again
