Help Please!!! FP2002 " System exception - access ... - 7/13/2003 10:51:45
Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded? from FP2000 to 2002 and have been getting the following error message: " System exception - access violation" , when I try to open a page from an existing Web. When you click OK FrontPage 2002 freezes up and you have to cancel the " Not responding" program. I have searched here and on the MS Knowledge base and I don' t see a consistant or definitive discussion of the problem and solution. Some say to uninstall FP and reinstall it and apply the Office SP-1 and SP-2. Others say to Repair and Detect or to Recalculate Hyperlinks. Some had other solutions. But there doesn' t seem to be much info out there on this problem. The only Knowledge base article referring to this error message is related to FP98. I did the uninstall and applying service packs and it worked OK for a week or so. Then last night, it is back again. Does anyone know the definitive answer to what is happening and what the fix is? I may have to reinstall FP 2000 just so I can get my work done. If you know what I can do, please come to my rescue. Thank you sooooo much for your help!:)

Thanks Spooky! I sent an email to the fellow who had the same problem, to see if he was able to solve it. I found a couple of threads here on our board about it too. On one of them Tom suggested re-installing FP2002 and applying the SP1 & 2 updates. I did that a week or so ago and it worked, but now it is back again. It is hard to believe that more people aren' t having this problem and that MS hasn' t come out with a fix yet. It might be a XP OS thing only. I am using FP2000 in the mean time, in order to get my work done. I really liked FP2002 until this started happening again.:)

I had a customer run into this. Here is how he solved the problem.

" I ran the Detect & Repair feature on FP2002 and then re-added the OfficeXP service packs again just for good measure. I actually began receiving an error message during the Detect & Repair that stated my Access 2002 ODBC drivers were corrupted, so after searching through MS TechNet I found several articles describing replacing certain ODBC registry keys. Upon doing this and reapplying SP1 & SP2 for OfficeXP I was then able to open the web."

Hi Tom,

Thanks. I saw this when I searched the Forum achives. It sounds a little complicated to me. Why do you think that I can work with the same pages with FP2000 but not with FP2002? I guess I will keep both around in order to be able to work with all of my clients' webs. You would think that MS would be aware of this problem. I use XP Home edition, Office XP Professional & FP 2002/FP2000. I think it must have something to do with XP?:)

I did a Google on " System exception - access violation" , and I got a number of hits. One was on the PixelMill FP Tutorial site. They report that it seems to go along with FP2002, Office XP, and XP O/S, and " templates" . They recommended uninstalling Office XP and FP and running Regedit, and deleting the folder 10.0 in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/Microsoft/office, and then reinstall. Another said that this worked untill he applied the service packs and then it " broke again" . Another user claimed success by reinstalling FP in " its own separate folder, not any MS of Office file" . He says " it worked like magic, problem solved in 5 minutes" . There was another reference on another site that sells templates. They also recommended using regedit and deleting the folder 10.0. Anyone have any comments? I am now having this problem in two of my clients' webs, one built with FP2000 and one with FP2002.:)

Well that didn' t do it. I uninstalled FP2002 and reinstalled it in a new folder (FP2002) in Program Files. I still get the error when opening specific pages. I will try the regedit thing and delete folder 10.0.:)

Hi again,

Just to keep this moving along, I tried uninstalling FP2002 and Office XP, doing the regedit and deleting the 10.0 folder, and then reinstalling FP2002 and Office XP. I am still getting the same error when opening certain pages. Someone suggested re-creating the specific page and deleting the old page. I may have to try that. I just wish I could understand why this is happening. Thanks for any help you can give.

You said that you " upgraded" to 2002... was that an upgrade or did you install the full version in addition to 2000?

Does your Office XP version have Front Page 2002 on it?

If so, try uninstalling FP 2K and Office XP, then just reinstall Office... FP 2002 should install along with it...

Then try the service packs, etc.

When I installed Office XP-Pro over FP 2000 it didn' t like it... so I unistalled 2000 and reinstalled Office along with FP 2K2... haven' t had any (unusual) problems since.

Just an idea...

Thanks again for your interest. I originally upgraded FP2000 to FP2002 and then started to get these error messages on webs that I created many moons ago. I then tried doing a full install of FP2002 in a separate directory from Office. My Office XP Pro did not include FP2002. The only way I can work with the pages that give me the error is to use FP2000 on them. Wierd.:)

RE: Help Please!!! FP2002 "System exception - acce... - 8/13/2003 14:33:03
I had this same problem, same configuration. Here's what worked for me:

1. Uninstall Office, Uninstall Frontpage. I hacked the registry a little too, to remove all the references to office.

2. Reinstall Frontpage - Custom install, name the folder for installation.

3. Reinstall Office - Custom install, name the folder, NOT the Frontpage folder.

4. Start Frontpage - I was setup to open my previously opened web, so my web opened, but Microsoft kindly (bleh) changed to a drive mapping rather than the UNC name I had been using. Close the opened web, click Open web, click My Network Places and open web webname on servername...., and voila! No more "System exception: access violation."

I was able to recreate this several times since there is a group policy pushing to a custom install of Office 2K to our container. I used to have Windows 2000 on my PC... had Frontpage 2002 and when my PC received the Office 2K push, there were no problems. It is only since Windows XP that the incompatiblity has appeared. I wish I had time to figure out why. In the meantime, I moved my PC out of the container because logging into the domain will remove my Office install, and reinstall it in my Frontpage folder - a vicious circle!

Just wanted to let you know that I had the infamous "System Exception: Access Violation" from FP02. I had a single page in my web that caused the error.
Platform: WinXPSP1/Off2003/FP2002SP2

I wanted to let you know that I found another way to fix the issue without reinstalling FP: I opened the webpage in IE, then clicked the down-arrow beside the EDIT icon and chose to edit the page in WORD. I then saved it, which of course added 'MSONormal' to all the formatting. I then relaunched FP02 and double-clicked the file in question that caused the error. It opened into Word and FP didn't lock or give an error. I then closed WD, went back to FP, right-clicked the file, chose "Open With" and selected FP from the list -- it opened fine, and has been opening fine ever since. Basically, letting WD reformat the document resolved the error, and I am pretty sure that any version of Word (2000 or higher) will correct the issue.

Hope this works for some of you!

I just started having this problem at 3pm. I found this forum and I nearly died reading all the things people had done.

I went to microsoft.com, went to the Frontpage Home page, then to Frontpage Downloads and I found an update for Office XP that could be installed without having my Office XP CD at hand. It was an exe file. I installed it and ... voilį ... it works!!

I hope this will not be recurring again tomorrow... Thank you all for your info.

I found my problem to be some files I inadvertently named like this Jim #2.jpg. Things had been working okay and then all of a sudden tonight I could not publish pages. Corrected those (took the # sign out) and things are working GREAT. Might try reviewing your file names. This was affecting the login, sychronizing and publishing.

I'm using FP2002 and office 2003. I'm having horrible problems being able to access my files and make any changes, however, I only have this issue when I try to look at reports, then the whole lockup thing goes on. Since my FP is set to open the last web I was working on, it made FP unuseable. However, I was able to get it working again by opening a page from Explorer using the OPEN With function.

Hi bradlm,

Have a look at the following thread, it is possible the latest MS critical updates are causing your problem:

I installed FP on my XT laptop with Office 2002 already installed, and started getting the Exception Violation error - "Frontpage has encountered a problem and must shut down" "Do you wish to restart Frontpage?"

It seemed to occur when I edited any page or site that used a template.

I reinstalled FT 2002, and then started getting the Access Violation errors". FP would either shut down or hang.

I checked versions, and everything looked okay - both FP and Office were 2002, 10.2623.68.25, SP3.

Still, I followed the advice above, and ran the Windows update. It found a couple of missing updates, so I installed them, and Presto! Everything looks good now.

Fingers are crossed.
