_vti_cnf files appearing in /forum/ directories - 7/15/2003 9:48:49
A very knowledgable volunteer has installed a new forum at one of the sites I manage. He reports he is constantly getting _vti_cnf folders and files added to all of the forum folders. Is it possible to stop these folders and files from sprouting up in /forum/ directories? They do not affect the operation of the forum software--except for one or two places where a drop down folder list appears on a menu. I assume they are somehow ending up in forum directories when I publish changes to the main website. I don' t know if this is the cause, but I have " Show Hidden Files and Folders" turned on. Will turning this option off eliminate the problem, or is there another way? thanks,

These _vti folders will show up in every directory on a FrontPage Server Extensions web. FP won' t display them but FTP will. Either ignore these folders, they don' t hurt anything, or remove the FP extensions from the website and they will no longer appear. FP uses files in these folders to track what files need updating when you publish, navigation, etc.

Thanks Doug, Here' s the one problem we facing and hope to fix withou removing fp extensions. The operation of the forum software is not effected, except as I mentioned for one or two places where a drop down folder list appears on a menu. In which case, there will be an erroneous _vti_cnf selection listed as the top choice--the underscore " _" appears first alphabetically. Anything you know of that we can do for this one problem? gail
