Hand Coding - 7/16/2003 14:54:43
Hi all,

I have a client that thinks he wants a hand coded site. One of my competitors told him that is why they gave him a proposal for $9800 vs my $2800.

He is totally sold on the quality being better then any WISIWYG site, that he is resigned to forking over the 10G' s. Heck I told him that I could do the same thing but I would' nt because that would be unfair to him.

Anybody ever face this problem? How often? Do you specificall say " hand coded site from scracth" on your literature or contracts?

Thanks
Barry

Almost every client asks me if I can hand code the site. (I think it is on a list of questions to ask your web designer)

I always assure them that yes I can hand code it but it will take longer and therefore cost lots more. If that is what they want I will be happy to do it. So far no one has taken me up on it.

Does he hand code his letters ?

Does he still listen to the wireless by lantern ??

You should also mention that every page is usually tidied up via handcoding, but usually isnt necessary.

How about marketing the site with the extra $$ saved (hit him up for a marketing campaign of PPC & capitialise on the extra $$ he is prepared to fork out).Instant results straight away is sure to impress.

Hand coding websites? Hand washing clothes?

Sure, it' s good to be able to do it, and now and then it is the wisest and easiest thing to do - but who would live without a washing machine?

Make him happy. Charge 10g.
(Just make sure you remove the " <meta name=" GENERATOR" content=" Microsoft FrontPage 5.0" >" from each page!) :)

Barry,

It sounds like someone sold him on code bloat or was FP bashing. FP is notorious for bloated code. However it is more a tool and reflects the craftsmans (persons) skills. The only FP feature I use is the include bot (I really need to just go SSI). I would try to find out what the added value of a hand coded page would hold in your clients eyes and then try to turn it around. If it is code bloat make a page for him/her to show them what you are capable of. Don' t get me wrong I feel the need to be able to hand code needs to be demonstrated to show you know how to remove the " fluff" but after that point it comes down to time (and money).

Turn the negatives into positives I always hear our sales rep say again and again.

Brian

I am with Spooky on this. Tell the client it is hand coded and remove any WYSIWYG indicators.

Oh, and charge *only* $6500.

Hmmmm $6500 shamooliees, I could buy alotta cool toys with that:):)

Actually, I did send him an amended proposal for $7500 bucks:), hand coded (not from scratch) web site. I also used Katherine' s washing machine analogy.

Me thinks he will go with the $2800 dollars

i will let you know

How' s he going to know the difference anyway? I use Dreamweaver (although used to use Frontpage, hence that' s why I' m here) and the code is already sooo clean anyway. You can just say you hand code, but don' t...
