FP server help please - 7/18/2003 22:39:50
Hi I hope someone can help with this problem:( I' ve recently purchased a new computer running XP Pro and loaded Fpage 2000 I' m anxious to start work on a new web, but password window and the Fpage PWs pop up, unlike my other computer running W2K. On the W2K machine and webs are listed as c:\whatever but on the new XP Pro machine the are listed as http://my computer name/myweb? How can I get Fpage to behave just like it does on W2K and get rid of the password window and the PWS little window. The set security permissions is blanked out . BTW the FP server extensions Version is 4.02.6.513 and the PWS32/4.0.2.2712 server extensions. Hope someone can help, as usual it' s probably something really simple...I hope;)

AFAIK, PWS doesn' t run on XP - are you sure you don' t mean IIS?

Maybe that' s the problem Gil...but they are the details I copied from the FPage PSW little window. Do I have any hope of getting it working?

IIS isn' t installed by default... it' s on the XP cd and you get there from " add/remove programs-->winndows" if a network is involved here then you will need to decide who will be the server suggest w2k iiiissssss6

There' s no network involved, as yet , it' s something I will do eventually. I read in an earlier post about IIS and installed it but Fpage didn' t like it and threw up error messages, so I uninstalled it. Perhaps this may help, my copy of Fpage is 98, then I got an upgrade to Fp2000,could this be the problem with XP Pro? What I' m trying to do is work on my sites on both computers to give my back a rest from sitting at the desktop. I know nothing about networking, but if I do as Boo suggested will I be able to access fpage on the second computer( the new one XP Pro) if the desktop computer running W2K is the main, server or gateway(not sure what you call it) Thanks for your help:)

Did you install the PWS off the FrontPage 98 CD? I don' t believe it' s compatible with XP. Try uninstalling any PWS, restart, then install IIS off the XP CD. Make sure you are an administrator user when you do all this.

Not good news...I uninstalled PWS, restarted then installed IIS to find this message " Fpage has detected web server conflict with Port 80 running IIS/5.1 server. Fpage requires that you install Fpage server extensions" . I could purchase a copy of Fpage 2002 or fpage 2002 upgrade, but I' m worried that when I install it on the W2K computer, currently running fpage2000 I' d lose my web sites. ...and whether on the new computer running XP Pro I' d encounter the same server problems. Thanks everyone for your help it' s much appreciated.

I don' t know how or why but fpage is working a treat after I renamed the CatRoot2 folder to CR2OLD! I was having a problem installing windows fix Q327696 so I emailed Microsoft and that' s what they said to do, ever since then frontpage is working properly...mind you I haven' t tried to publish any yet but I' m hopeful;)

IIS 5.x has this thingy called the MetaBase, which is kind of like a registry for webservers. Things in the MetaBase can get screwed up and become virtually impossible to fix. It sounds like things are coming together for you!

I like it when you sound positive, because most of the time I' m flying by the seat of my pants;) Still haven' t tried to publish yet, just savoring the pleasantries of hassle free computing and waiting till I have a stiff scotch to help me through.
