Positioning - CSS or Tables - 7/21/2003 8:17:09
I have been advised by one of my customers that using stylesheets for positioning causes problems with Safari the new Mac browser. He also claims that using layers is a problem because Safari won' t recognise links that are on the ' wrong' layer.

His advice is that right now everyone should use CSS for formatting only and use tables for positioning.

I have found that Netscape won' t recognise the formatting or the position of CSS ' beveled edge buttons' on a test page I made, but I feel the consensus view in this forum is that netscape can be safely ignored because of it' s low market share.

But what about the Mac users who are changing to Safari? How significant are they and when added to the Netscape users does this make a good case for only using tables for positioning?

Some advice would be useful because I am just about to redesign my company' s site and I don' t want to exclude a significant number of potential customers.

CSS vs Tables... both have ups and downs. CSS tends to be far more powerful, but also a bit trickier. Tables tend to be easier to impliment, but somewhat limited (since they' ve never been intended for use as a layout tool).

Also, older browsers don' t always recognize CSS for positioning.

I' d be surprised if Safari had problems with CSS... considering it' s origin and how new it is. The problem may not be CSS, but that it' s not being used properly, or some features aren' t supported by Safari.

I would say build a page using some basic CSS and have someone with Safari check it out... or get ahold of Knoppix ( www.knoppix.com ) and check it out in Konqueror (the Linux browser that Safari is built on...)

Bottom line is that not all browsers treat CSS the same, unfortunately... but NN was by far the worst as of late (IMO).

There isn' t anything wrong with using CSS for fomatting and Tables for layout, if that' s the way you decide to go.

Safari support for CSS is not what it might be. There is an excellent review here:

Great read Kathrine... that' s good info.

Especially now that there won' t be a new IE for Mac... :)

Mabye time to play with more CSS in Konqueror... :)

Hopefully the 1.1 or 1.2 release of Safari will fix those issues... we can always dream, right?

This link might be useful to anyone who wants a quick look up grid of what supports what:
